got a vts engine to put into my vtr can anyone tell me if i need the ignition barrel and key got the loom and ecu? can get the barrel if i need to

If it is an unlocked ECU then take the immobiliser box off your VTR before you put the new engine in. This will however leave the car with no immobiliser. This is by far the easiest way to do it and you wont need anything other than the unlocked ECU from the VTS.

If its a locked ECU then post back and i will explain.

    Right. If its locked.

You need the following from the donor car. This will mean you have a working immobiliser.

    - If you don't mind using a separate key to start it.

ECU, Immobiliser box, Ignition Barrel, Keys, Immobiliser pickup ring (for good measure)

    - If you want to have the same key for all locks etc

ECU, Immobiliser box, Ignition Barrel, Keys, Immobiliser pickup ring (for good measure) and all the locks from the other doors.

Alternatively, get the ECU unlocked. Your friend should of unlocked it by unplugging the immobiliser box with the engine running really before he took the engine out.

any other ways of doing it without having a working imobiliser? cheers

Not really. Only other possibility is...

    1) Put the engine back in the car it came from
    2) Start the engine.
    3) Unplug little black immobiliser box
    4) Stop engine.
    5) Try starting engine again to see if it works okay without the immobiliser box.
    6) ECU is unlocked

If you were to do that then don't put the unlocked ECU into a car with an immobiliser box because it will lock it again.

I suggest you pay to have it sent away and unlocked and then it will always stay unlocked regardless of whether you have an immobiliser box in the car. That's the least painful way.

PM ryanmt as i believe he offers an ECU unlocking service.

you will also need to make up a fuel return or use the vts one, dependant on if you have one or not

is the engine you have out of the same MK saxo as yours as in MK1 VTS to MK1 vtr?

if not you will have fun splicing the wires together

This is a 100% sure way not to have a working conversion unless you are a seriously pro auto electrician and mechanic.

I find generally when people are doing 16v conversions that they do it the quickest way possible and then come on here wondering why it does not work properly.

When i did my friends 106 16v conversion we did the following and all properly. Takes a long time if you do it all to manufacturer spec but definitely worth it.

    1) Engine
    2) 16v cooling setup
    3) 16v fuel return setup
    4) Suspension components - arms, struts, ARBs etc
    5) 16v brake setup including disc to drum beam swap
    6) Lowering
    7) Digital dials conversion
    8) Fuel tank and pump change

Only thing left of the original 106 Quicksilver is the shell haha.
