Important! : Gearbox seems funny...

    Hi

Im new to the forums so just thought i would say hi

First of all i have a 1.4 Wreg citroen saxo furio

I was having a few problems with the gearbox at forst it was clunking on over run and so on.
Any way i saved a few pennies up and finally got a "new" one from the scrap yard they say it has "65.000" on the clock ok sounds good for £80
so takes it to the garage today and had it fitted anougher 80 notes.
Goes for a test drive and it seems to me "fked"
First and third seem closer than they should be so you get third when wanting first and viceversa
It grinds when you go from 4th to third and second to first (not when u go up though)
you have to double clutch to get it into reverse.

Basicly a nightmere to drive right now.

My question is has the mechanic set the gear linkeges up correcly or is the gearbox screwed?

a quick reply would be greatfully appreciated.

    Thanks

    James

Get someone to sit in the car and shift gears and you look down at the gear linkages and make sure thier all shifting

Sounds to me like the box to be honest... Go to a garage and try get a definate answer then go straight to the scrappies if it is i think you get a 14 day warranty with most

Yeah i rung the scrap yard and they said "if you get it off for us we will replace it" its just the getting off bit thats anougher 80 notes i havnt got.

IIRC there are 2 balls on the gearbox linkage at different points in relation to the pivot of the linkage that can be used. If they have put that particular linkage rod on the wrong ball it moves the gears closer. The knock you experienced with the first box is 99% of the time the gearbox lower mount worn, costs very little to replace and can be done with basic tools in half an hour.

Sounds like a nightmare to have to take the box back off. Shame you did not get a second opinion (sorry if you did, I am only sumising). I do hope you get it sorted. All the best mate.

I got told the knocking was the "diff bearings" that was from the first mechanic the second mechanic told me it was just the gearbox on its way out i checked the gearbox mount and it seemed in fairly good nick compaired to the top left that is totally falling to bits.

Also to add the first and third "second and fourth" gears been closer together u can hear it nocking as though the bar undearneath the car (that joins the gearbox to the gear lever) is tapping on the chassis. and when u decelerate from first gear it nocks again but if you hold the gear knob it doesnt do it.

also to add to my above post
the knocking on overrun as stopped with the new gearbox
