time for the woman to take over

  1. #1
    Hi there.

My husband by his own admission is pretty useless when it comes to cars. (Amazing with computers) and our Saxo 1st year 2000 is being naughty.

My main concern is that whilst driving along it seems to suddenly develop kangaroo like symptoms for a few seconds and then suddenly decides to be nice again. Also seems to be using a lot of fuel latley. Maybe due to the cold weather i know but maybe not.

Anyway if anyone has any ideas on what can cause this kind of problem I would be very much appreciate it. (my husband would also get all of a 10 minute window of nag free conversation)!

    Thanks

    Desperate housewife.

How is the car when you are stationary at say traffic lights?
  3. #3
usually it's fine, but sometimes it will 'pulse' if we're sat on the clutch and then rev freely once the clutch is let back in.

Could be the icv (idle control valve) there is a guide on here on how to clean it..

We'll have a look and see if that's the culprit. Thank you for now.

Yup could be the ICV, could also be Dirty Spark Plugs, Dirty or Faulty Crank Sensor.
    Blocked Fuel Filter.
    Coolant Temp Sensor.

Lambda Sensor sounds like it could be something to do with it as you say it jults when driving, You can spray some WD40 on the Connector to disperse any water in there.

I'd clean that ICV as that might be the Idle problem but that isn't normally the cause for Juddering when driving as it come into use when the car's on idle.

    Have fun and good luck

I'd change the fuel filter, it takes 5 minutes. Theres a guide on here how to do it. (a quick search will find it).

I let my 106 get low on fuel once and it dragged all the shit out the bottom of the tank into the filter and clogged it up. Resulting in similar symptoms as what you're experiencing. A quick filter change and tank filled to brim sorted it.

Could be coil pack, quite common failure.

Could be if it boggs under load...

HI, Husband here! Thanks for everyones help so far (thank yous will follow).
Hopefully I can clarify what's happening with the car.
On most mornings, the car will start first time, but the battery light shows and I need to load on some revs for a while to get up to idle. If I blip the throttle, the engine will die, not stall, die. If I leave it running and don't apply revs, it will slowly increase in revs to about 850, then 'stutter' and idle.
DUring this, there can be a strong smell of petrol.
Whilst driving, I will sometimes feel like I'm losing power and backing off then applying throttle will solve it. Also when lifting off, the power can go off quite rapidly.

I'm going to check and clean the ICV as suggested (does anyone kow where it is on a 1.0?) and change the fuel filter.

i had something like this on mine for awhile as well was a night mare, i change the fuel filter and put in some injector cleaner then gave it a good revving once it got up to running temp and it seemed to clean it out and solve the problem

I would personally check the coil pack too as it sounds like fuel isnt always reaching the engine to keep a steady supply..

    The fuel pump too

I had a similar problem which turned out to be the temp sensor.
  14. #14
As you can see, it can be a few things that causes these problems.

Best bet is to do one by one

How can it be the coilpack if the problem's fuel starvation?

    True.

Fedrat, you can check if its the coolant temp sensor, just pull the wires off the the green thing at the right hand end of the engine block [passenger side], it will go into default mode but if it runs better that is it.

PS on mine there are two coolant temp sensors, one green and one blue, one is for the ECU and one for the dashboard temp guage, not sure which is which

Green is ECU. If the engine goes nuts (uneven idle, chugging, stalling etc) when the connector is pulled of then the sensor is okay. If engine does nothing then the sensor needs changing.

Hi, I can't locate a green wired sensor at the passenger end of the engine block. Is it located elsewhere on the 1.0l engine?

I'm going to try a new fuel filter this week and see if that helps. If it does........

i had this problem when i put my blew my fuse which link the horn with the revs idle used to jump all over the place new fuse in job done

Thought I'd better let you know that I've had a new ICV fitted and everything is as it should be.
    Next job, new stereo.
