Chalkboarding

  1. #1
Now have seen a few cars on here and various other places that have been painted with chalkboard paint.

I'm doing it in the new year because IMO it looks cool and my VTR needs some loving before it dies.

Now my question is, do you just slap it straight on (car cleaned obv.) or will it need sanding down etc?
  2. #2
mate did it with his golf looks the dogs, what he did mate was simple prep scotchd the whole care then rollerd it on, not sure if u can get it in spray but we did he bonnet with a brush and it looked just aweful

    hope that helps
  3. #3
Scotch? The washing up pad things?
  4. #4
I Want to do my alloys lol
  5. #5
Ive got a question actually.. if i was to do the hole car.. im getting a respray this xmas time dark blue but if i was to put chalkboard paint on it will it stay black or will it go blue after washing ?

yea all you need to do is make sure the car has a good key for the paint to stick

not reli sure why you would want to chalk after respray but to answer im guessing the chalk will stay black
  8. #8
    pics??
  9. #9
The paint will find it hard to stick to the lacquer.
Just sand the car down and roller it on for a smooth finish, or you could spray it out of rattle cans and you will get it done quicker; if albeit a worse finish imo.
  10. #10
i was planning to roller it as i assumed brushing would leave brush lines everywhere
  11. #11
just have a chalkboard bonnet, wwould be cool

  18. #18

lol so you just roller that on
my car has been primed grey so do i just paint ontop of that or do i put the black rattlecan base first?
i carnt believe that has just been rollered realy looks good
also what rollers are used for a good finish
  21. #21
Aslong as your surface is keyed then you can roller it straight on.
Should be fine with it being in primer too.
    1 user thanked this post:
  22. #22
    what does keyed mean mate?
do you mean the shine took off?
  23. #23
I rubbed down with wet and dry, gave the paint something to hold to.

Then just roller away! Thin coats, but lots of them for the best finish I found.

nice one mate, im defenatly going to do this
not sure what colour to do the grill and wheels but will think about that afterwards because the weather is shite at the moment carnt do anything but can get the materials ready
  25. #25
    True man.

Depends if you want to contrast like mine, or be subtle like tonto's. He had black steelies, whereas I've got lumi orange VTR rims!

I quite like the idea of matt black vtr rims, with lime green rim tape for yours... If its the one in your DP. Keep the green!
  26. #26
have to get rid of that green mate its rattlecanned and can see badly in some places lol (i didnt rattlecan it)
im liking the idea of iluminus yellow or green for wheels and grill lol
  27. #27
I meant keep the green theme! Just chalk the car, and either do the rims in lumi green, or do the wheels matt with lumi green rim tape?
  28. #28
    ahh yeah good idea mate
did you use a foam roller or did you use one of those fluffy ones
  29. #29
Fluffy was rubbish. Used a small foam one for the best finish
  30. #30
    thanks mate
  31. #31
this looks sweet! stupid question but if you write on it with chalk will it wipe straight back off? :')

bumstops all round. when i measured it against a standard, it ws about 120mm iirc.

thanks. but it does cause abit of damage, new shocks are needed after a short while... well untill it came to MOT lol. so was like that for a year.
  37. #37
Awesome. Once ive got mine sorted, I'm feeling a major drop like that How was it you got the front down by that much? surely their isn't any springs with that much of a drop? Or were they cut ?

Or no springs at all? Sorry about this being question time

    Ed.

    Ed.
i took the springs out. and welded the shock compressed.
at the time i thought it was a great idea...i still do! i might do it again! but people on here give you grief as "its not safe" but man, it looks fucking sweet!

well only problem i had was needing to put new shocks in for the mot.
not that im saying it wont do harm else where, to anyone else or if i did it again.
  39. #39
Ahh right I see. May have to look at doing something like that then.
Yeah, I'd probably change my shocks at somepoint in the next 12 months or so anyway, so It can be Bumpy and harsh all it likes until then

Haha, Yeah..Its all about the looks for me. I've only got a 1.1, so performance and comfort don't bother me
    Cheers man.

    I have a 1.1 too...hence why i did it.
Not botherd about going quick, as some people like to call it.

Imo it did look the fucking mutts nuttz! I think tomorrow i might deck the arse end again, as i raised it to a 40mm all round when i put the new shocks in.
She is going in a few months, so might just ruin her till then!

So far..I've used about 2/3 of one tin. (1 Litre tin)

Ive got the roof, and a door to do.
then go over it again to remove/cover any imperfections.
2 litres would probably do you nicely with plenty to spare.

i have been escorted to the jet wash after one of my mates wrote some pretty epic racial remarks, and a few jokes about Maddy and Nazi.

other than that, most people dont seem to give a toss tbh.
  69. #69
dont you have to let someone know that youve changed the colour?
  70. #70
i think you just send the logbook off for colour change if its gone from a different colour to black

Just carry a chalk board rubber with you! Epic Win against the machine.
