just got my car sorted after freezing it, but unfortunately yesterday i was going up a hill and a moment of lunacy went over me and i decided to redline it and then dump clutch after going up a speed bump in 1st, went fine for about 3 metres but then i heard a large groaning sound and then car stopped, still ticked over but wouldnt move, wouldnt go into gear and the steering wheel wouldnt move, got out to have a look, massive oil leak, numerous bolts and screws rolling down the road, my uncle had a look today, ive blown the end of the gear box and wrecked the drive shaft, not what u need over the christmas period, ive suspended the insurance as its a tenner a day, should be back on the road within two weeks, sad times.,............
dont spin it up on a hill

#2insurance a tenner a day?!?!?! Thats £300 a month. I pay just less than that a year for my VTS!
-
#3Anyway. Second hand gearbox, driveshaft. job done.
Sounds like you destroyed the Diff. -
#4I dont think we need the advice of redlining it and dum, ping the clutch, we aint all dumb like that.7 users thanked this post: , , , , , ,

We make a living out of people breaking their cars -
#10Oh shit forgot. I reccomend doing what the OP said once a day just to make sure the engine dosent seize in this weather.Quote:don't go telling everyon the secret of gearbox preservation, how will i make a living then?

#12insurance for new drivers has gone up 51 percent in last year though, its ridiculous, i searched everywhere, all the comparison place, and rang up loads of insurers direct aswell. in my opinion its worth it though, ive wanted one since i was 15.hapy to work hard to run it, itll go down loads after a year no claims n e way.

#14You wait a few months and you will be bored.Quote:insurance for new drivers has gone up 51 percent in last year though, its ridiculous, i searched everywhere, all the comparison place, and rang up loads of insurers direct aswell. in my opinion its worth it though, ive wanted one since i was 15.hapy to work hard to run it, itll go down loads after a year no claims n e way.
I'm 24 and driven saxos for 6 years. Going to buy something German next year. So fed up of fixing my VTS. In the last year its had...
- clutch
- engine mount
- damper change
- drop links
- rust sorted
- idle problem sorted
- oil leak sorted
- trailing arm bearings replaced
- manifold changed
- new battery -
#15so you've looked forward to getting one and take no pride in looking after it? i can understand maxing it and racing around but seriously why would you do stupid stuff in weather like this? untill people actully get in a bad situation which almost write their car off and almost injure themselves thats when they start to drive sensible in the snow?Quote:insurance for new drivers has gone up 51 percent in last year though, its ridiculous, i searched everywhere, all the comparison place, and rang up loads of insurers direct aswell. in my opinion its worth it though, ive wanted one since i was 15.hapy to work hard to run it, itll go down loads after a year no claims n e way.
Wake Up Pal! -
#16Snap! I also only paid £998 for insurance as newbie driver of a MK2 Vtr! now im on a MK1 vtr 4 years on and its £510
-
#17Nothing drastic there, just routine maintainance and consumable items IMO.Quote:You wait a few months and you will be bored.

#19hope i wont get bored lol, compared to my company car 2.5d nirvara, the acceleration is insane, pretty fast in my opinion, if i had a vts id probably wrap it round in a tree in 5 minutesQuote:You wait a few months and you will be bored.

#23haha y did u chose to spin it up when the weather is shit out
-
#26werent bad where i did it, up through a gritted clear of snow estate, no snow on the road, if the weather was that bad then id take the nirvara out instead of the vtr.werent the weather that did it, it was my 13 year old car components and my eager feet.
-
#2813 year old component probably is a very small factor. I'd say dropping the clutch at 6250 RPM was your biggest problemQuote:werent bad where i did it, up through a gritted clear of snow estate, no snow on the road, if the weather was that bad then id take the nirvara out instead of the vtr.werent the weather that did it, it was my 13 year old car components and my eager feet.

#30Yes but they are only like 12k brand new so why should they build a supermini from the 1990s to a high standard? If its build quality you are looking for then a saxo/106 isn't the best is it?Quote:Doesn't matter how old it is. If they were engineered to a higher standard in the first place then it would not have needed so much doing to it.
You may have just been unlucky in that you own the car at a time when its OEM parts are wearing out. -

#32This year at 18 I got a quote of £1600.Quote:insurance for new drivers has gone up 51 percent in last year though, its ridiculous, i searched everywhere, all the comparison place, and rang up loads of insurers direct aswell. in my opinion its worth it though, ive wanted one since i was 15.hapy to work hard to run it, itll go down loads after a year no claims n e way.

#33Not everyone gets bored of their stuff. Some people like what they have. Others don't care and always want better.
-
#34Drop links are, especially if it's lowered. They have rubber seals, rubber perishes no matter what car it's on. Same goes for engine mounts. Trailing arm bearings, well, they're bearings, expect them to wear over time. Rust, i'm sure it was pretty minor compared to how badly some cars get it, and how soon (i've seen a 54 plate Ka with rust around the rear wiper and filler cap).Quote:you are joking right??
These are consumables
- clutch
- new battery
The rest are not.
In regards to the OP, erm, Saxo boxes aren't particularly strong, you might wanna learn to treat them with mechanical sympathy, otherwise it'll not be the only one you go through. -
#35i Lol'ed
Was it snow/ice then it gripped which caused it to rip the diff apart? -
#41Christ thats the only thing good about being an old git(43 ys old) £230.00 a year fully comp insurance.Mk1 vtr.
Steve. -
#42fuck paying 3600 for a vtr rather stick to a 1.1 . thats why are insurances goes up up because kids get vtrs for first cars and write them off
-
#43hasnt happened yet to me, yer there quite fast but they aint ferraris, what bout all those rich spoilt kids out there drivin mumy and dadys porsche around, them mainly the cause
-
#45if your with admiral ring them up and put your mum and dad our who ever on as named drivers and it will come down in price
