Vtr -106 gti lump conversion

  1. #1
I've managed to source a cheap 106 gti lump on low milage. The engine comes with the inlet & exhaust manifold, alt, starter etc. I know i need to change too 16v shafts but what ecu & engine wiring loom combo do i go for? I have a mk2 2001 vtr engine in at the mo. I'm going to be doing the conversion with a mate so if theres any info that you think would help ide be greatfull. I'm going to be doing the cambelt whilst its out and a full service.
    Thanks Tommy.

2001 VTS loom would be easiest i'd have thought. is the 106 engine single or 3 plug, likewise is the car single or 3 plug?

not too sure mate, the engine dosent come with the loom or ecu.

do you have the 16v top engine mount?

You shouldnt need to change driveshafts, unless the old ones are faulty.

your loom and ecu has to match what you curently have but the vts version, So idd think, 3 plug ecu andBig single plug connector at the left hand wing in the engine bay if you have the gti ecu thatll be fine.

If you get one from the same year if possible it should be fine. if you find a loom that is right buy it, dont hold out for a cheap one as they dont come up on there own very often.

you might need a few different sensors aswell.

you may need new injectors and injector loom if its an early engine easy way to check is on the exhaust cam ladder there will be 2 lugs to bolt the fresh air pump valve too (mistaken as egr a lot)

you will need the later saxo vts loom and a 3 plug ecu

is the car single or 3 plug ecu? my 2001 was 3 plug, if it is then a 2001 3 plug saxo VTS loom and unlocked ECU will probably be your best bet, may have to swap a few sensor plugs though depending on year etc of engine

Driveshafts are only a couple of months old, i thought that the vts ones where different too vtr. If there the same ill usew them

The top engine mount, im not too sure. Ive just changed them to vibra tech ones?

I think mines a 3 plug. So if i was to get a 3 plug unlocked ecu with wiring that should be fine. What sensors do you usally have to convert?

only the abs pickup rings on the shafts

you have a vtr so itll be the same mount as a vts one

and usually the oil sensor by the filter the water temp sensor the map sensor the icv the tps the air flow basically most of them aswell as the injectors differ aswell as the loom

i converted a 3 plug vts motor to go into my single plug 106 gti had to change allsorts (so much that when it went back into a 3 plug saxo a few years after i forgot something resulting in a severe missfire shit running and basically an undriveable car

some inlet sensors can be re-used, but quite a few are different, Youll have to look at what you have and what the loom uses...

As for top mount its the top alloy piece you need, the rubber mounts are interchangeable.

S top mount bracket is distinguished by having 4 bolt holes in the ally casting rather then 3 on standard mount

can use the 8v it just doesnt clear the cam blet cover so needs a little grind its what most of the guys with an s1 106 do as the mount is totally different on them
