Car respray..

  1. #1
    Hi,

Im looking to change my car colour.. i know ill have to change it on the log books.. Its going from gold.. to chalkboard...

Will this affect my insurance at all?
  2. #2
nope mate cant see how it would only a colour
  3. #3
nope. if anything it will make it cheaper as chalk board will cost the insurance less than metallic paint if they were to repair it. but they wont see it like that your premium will stay the same.

Thats ok just wanted to make sure
  5. #5
    Im not so sure.

Changing the paint colour to anything other than the registered colour on the vechiles registration would be modifying.

And we all know what insurance companys like to do when the cars been modified - increase the price.

If you are changing the colour, you will need to re-register it with the DVLA. There are more than likely forms and costs involved.

My advice would be to ask you insurers and search the internet regarding the colour change on the V5.

Only thing i can think of is surely.. if the car is actually re-registered and being.. say black.. when you put the reg in the insurance thing it will come up as being black?.. Or am i completely wrong?

it costs nothing to change the colour on the log book you can get the form from directgov.com
you literally fill in the form they send you a form back with boxes to tick with the colour you send it back and they send you a new v5 job done.

and the number of cars i have changed the colour of at work the premium has never changed and a colour change is not classed as a modification its classed as a change of usage so doesn't cost anything.

yeah get the form and send it in they sometime's ask to take it to a vosa test centre for proof that it is actually the car you say it is but that's only on high end cars that cost loads so its not just a stolen car with your reg plates on it.

other than that if you do drive the car and don't tell them of the colour change it can be 6 points and up to £1500 quid fine as it messes with the police systems in the squad cars.

you dont even need a form from the dvla now mate i just had a word with my boss and all you need to do is fill in section 7 on your v5c document (log book) with your new colour and send it RECORDED!!!! to d.v.l.a swansea and you will get a new log book back within 4 weeks.

that's the point mate lol change the look of it every week / day if you like.

loads do it at shows just leave a pack of chalk on the bonnet and leave the car for the day.

Yeah and I can't afford a respray.. And the area I live in my car has already had paint stripper put on it so I don't to waste all that money when it will probably happen again..

Do you have a link for it? I'm on my phone atm how does it go on then? Just prep the car as normal... Primer? Then roller it on?

if your car has good paint in the first place no need to primer just rub it down with a red scotch pad clean with pre paint 1 rag to wipe on 1 rag to wipe off and paint over the original paint and will be fine and if you need to do body work with filler just spot prime those areas and paint over with a small smooth foam roller to get a decent finish.
  21. #21
Yeah I have patches that have been fillered and primered over, I've then got a few larger stone chips and stuff to rub out then will be ready! Thanks for all your help!
  22. #22
i wouldn't rub the stone chips out mate as you end up with high and low spots i would get something called upol top stop gold its like a really smooth filler that fills the stone chips and you just flat the top off with some 600 wet and dry and a block gets rid of the stone chips and keeps the body smooth and str8.
  23. #23
Ah right where could i get that? I doubt halfrauds or wilco will sell it?
  24. #24
halfords sell quite a lot of upol stuff so maybe but any decent motor paint factors will sell it its the widest used stopper in the car trade.
  25. #25
Sweet! I'll have a look after Christmas
  26. #26
Will I see you before you do your car? I'll show you how to do it properly with chalkboard to get a decent finish over the car.
  27. #27
anyone got a link for the best paint to use?
  28. #28
My paint was from toolstation. - http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Pain.../sd3175/p48397
