So I am replacing my 2000 plate vtr engine with the same 2002 plate engine but do I have to get the ecu unlocked as I am just swapping them over literally
Any help appreciated

i think if you changeing just the engine and using your ecu and keys that it should work fine mate

As said if its just the engine it will be fine.
If you change the ECU thats another story. Are both engines from 3 Plug ECU cars?

you either need the immbolisher box and key from the car the engine came from, or get the ECU unlocked,
