Heating only works when giving it a thrashing?

   On me mates 16v, the heating didnt work, so put in a thermostat (previous owner didnt even have one ). tryed bleeding the system but the nothing was coming out the last bleed screw near the cambelt. The coolant is a funny colour so going to do a coolant change tomorrow, could the lack of decent coolant be the problem here?

   Possible the water pump not pushing the coolant around the engine or it could be the head gasket shot..

   might be worth giving the sytem a good flushing through with a hose as you might have a blockage somewhere
