Important! : alternator belt -which do I need?

   Need a bit of help, the belt got chewed up on Xmas eve and the car is sat an hour away needing a new belt.
   
   Its a Mk1 VTR, 8v 1.6, when I ring people up about a new belt they keep asking me if I need a 'v belt or a 5 rib belt'?
   
   Anyone know which type it takes?

   I`m pretty sure you need a ribbed belt on these.Look up your car on somewhere like gsfcarparts you`ll be able to type in the year reg etc.

   Do you have part of the belt to hand? If you look closely (cross sectional), the belt will either be have V shape grooves in it (V-belt) or squared grooves (ribbed);
   
   But as said if you phone most car parts places and give them your registration they should know.
