Overheating - Oil Temp - Dno Wot to Do.

  1. #1
    Hey all.

Not long had my little VTS and having some issues with overheating, Nothing major but I can't figure it out and I NEED it sorted for the start of the summer.

Basically noticed that my temp was sitting a bit high a few weeks ago while sittin having a munch at the o'l Micky Dee'z. So I bunged the fans on and cooled down to just above normal.

So Basically got used to having the fans full pelt while the snow was around lol
Now the snows gone, I'm managing to get round some twisties n some 2nd gear magic but soon after I start I have to slow down again because the Oil Temp starts to rise very quickly

I changed the thermostat and a coolant and water change, now its sits slightly cooler but still too hot with the fans on (water temp wise)

And the Oil Temp still shoots up when you give it some beans

Need this sorted as I plan to have it on the track as soon as weather permits and i wont finish a lap before I have to slow down to let the thing cool.

    Any options appreciated guys

Have you checked the oil level?

    Condition of Rad?

Sensor could be duff maybe. Is it got a oil cooler on it with the pipes coming off top radiator hose to it (i think only mk2 have these though)

No it doesn't have the oil cooler and my radiator is not in the best nik. It's not bent or leaking but it's got some gouges on the inside like sum ones workin near the manifold and Not been very careful. The oil level is fine and there's no cream under the cap.

Where do the water and oil temp gauages sit?
  7. #7
oil on the right side and water on the left bud

Haha aye, sorry. Should have worded that 'where do the needles sit on the gauges'.

Are they getting high enough to put the warning light(s) on?

lol Nah never high enough to make warning lights come on but just about. When im booting it the oil shoots up faster than the water temp.

    This is normal

My oil temp gauge reads the max temp when out on track , the water never reads much above the middle even on track

When was the last time you changed the oil ? What oil grade did you use

if its excesive then think about new rad, possibly a nissens rad

+1 oil will get hotter when having a play. mine never went to the max though, you must drive yours hard on track

My water temp gauge has a mind of its own - when the engine is warming up, it can sometimes shoot up to 3/4, then back to a 1/4. Eventually it reaches the 1/2 mark and doesn't really go much higher than that.

Oil sits just under the 1/2 round town and stays at 3/4 on track days. I read on the Rallye Register that the standard oil temp gauage reads between 70 and 100C - oil will start to 'break down' at around 130C. Personally, as long as the warning light isn't on, the temp is within 'safe' limits.

If you feel it is running hot, an aluminium core radiator may help. A standard VTS oil cooler (fitted to later models) may be worth investing in too.

Wots the proses fitting one to the older engine?

I'm looking at a new radiator just now and a full service kit, also an extra fan to convert it to the twin fan.

When driving around town its just above 1/2, If sitting with the engine on parked up it goes upto 3/4 but when driving around nice and easy and the temp is sitting just above normal, after 2 or 3 minutes of some 2nd n 3rd gear action around the backroads the oil temp shoots right up over 3/4 then I stop. I wont push it long enough to make the warning light come on but im damn sure it will if i let it.

That sounds about normal for a VTS without the standard oil cooler and a rad that's seen better days.

If you're fitting a standard oil cooler, may as well do it when you service - you'll need to drop the oil and water. You'll also need a top radiator hose with the take offs for the cooler.
