Engine light and power steering

   Hi
   
   I know absolutely nothing about cars, but would rather ask people first rather than take my car to a garage and have to pay loads if its something simple or doesnt need bothering with.
   
   When I turn my engine on the battery light comes on, and the power steering is really heavy. If I rev the engine then the light goes off and the steering returns to normal.
   
   Is there something seriously wrong with my car? Can I fix it myself? How much is this going to cost me!?!

   That sounds like your alternator is faulty,or a loose drivebelt.

   Not if you can buy a 2nd hand alternator Halfords do free alternator & battery testing so i`d get it checked before spending any money.
