Constant Whine From Engine Bay

  1. #1
just started s up first time in about 2 months, started up fine, ive fitted a new battery but get a constant whine from something in the bay, no idea what though, its not fuel pump as i know thats behind me and hear it stop, but something from the bay carries on, i have litterally no idea i cant even work out where bouts its coming from in the bay, altho i cant imagine there is to many places capable of such noise, im wondering if its something to do with fuel system? doesnt sound like altenator or a belt either

anyone got any ideas? doesnt appear to stop it running fine

Does it change pitch/get louder when revs increase?

Is it all the time? The fresh air pump thing whines but they will stop after 30 sec or so.
I get a whirring grind noise from the clutch release bearing.

    air pump has been removed

it doesnt appear to change with revs

im now thinking power steering pump, i moved the wheel when keys were in ignition and it stopped for a bit

Probably power steering pump. Turn the wheel when stationary, and if it gets louder/changes pitch, its narrowed down to alternator or power steering pump.

yeah this is what happens mate, really doesnt sound like its coming from altenator though, but the sound is quite high pitched, and quite hard to work out where abouts its coming from

everythings working fine, just be nice to know what it is. need to have a play with a few things at once, use some power n see if it changes again

Can you tell what side of the bay at all?

Power steering whine will change pitch or either get louder/quieter and alternator whine will always get louder as you increase revs.

So from what you've said, I'm gonna say it's probably power steering pump.

Mine does the same, a constant whine, so much so its equal to the engine noise when ticking over. Mine doesn't whine when going up/down the gears, so I don't think in my case its the alternator.

But my power steering is working fine, if it ain't broke don't fix it in my case. Still say its the power steering pump though.

    is this still an issue?

Mine makes a whining noise. sure it's the pas pump. but it still works, touch wood, so no need to replace it yet

    if its a pump, would a pump from a 1.1 fit ?

Yes because there all electric power steering pump's but my opinion on it is stop being gay and fit non PAS

deff sounds like pas pump and in all saxos ive looked at the pump wines when runing to check if its the pas there is a green connector with one wire in and out disconnect it and the pump shud stop
