Indicator & wiper relays

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

My 2001 mk.2 Saxo has recently developed a problem with the indicators. Basically I can switch the stalk into position and nothing happens, no lights on dash or click, nothing. Sometimes it works fine with no problems, on some journeys both of these things can happen! It is getting annoying!

I believe it is the relay because sometimes the hazards don't work either and a sudden bump with the switch left on (to test) may kick them in to life. Also I have fiddled with and removed and reconnected the relay once or twice and miraculously got it flashing again before it decides to fail again. Is this a faulty relay and if so how much should I expect to fork out?

One last question: should the rear windscreen wiper be intermittent? Mine has always been on constant with wash, constant, or off. From reading tonight maybe it should be intermittent? I would check the manual but can't be arsed to go out in the wet and cold and get it! Another faulty relay?

Be great if I could get some feedback on this asap.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Michael.

The rear windscreen wiper is either on or off,go to a scrappy & get aother relay.

Right, so the rear windscreen wiper is fine, and you are sure the problem with the indicators is the relay? Would it be better to get a brand new/unused one? Just don't want to waste money!

    Cheers,
    Michael

Try a scrapyard 1st mate rather than waste money (its a small not noticeable item if you know what I mean)

    Hi guys,

Okay before going out and buying a relay (which it seems will be hard to find out here in the country) I flicked through the trusty Haynes and it implied that the relay may not be at fault. It says something like if it 'energises' by clicking when you operate the system (which mine does exactly as far as I can tell - i.e when I press the hazard on or off or flick the indicators to flash on or off it clicks once) then the problem is elsewhere in the system. But to me it still seems to be the relay as before a vibration or shock knocked it in to misbehaving and the hazards do not make a difference to it either. The fact that it is intermittent and not permanent also leads me to believe it is a physically temperamental thing like the relay as opposed to hard electrical wiring.

Obviously this will not do for the long term so any advice on this in particular would be great! I am hoping it is only the relay and not something more serious...?

Incidentally where on the headlights (on a mark 2) can you physically adjust the beam height? I know there is a wight dial which I think changes the horizontal angle but I read there is a torx/allen screw for the manual height adjustment (I do have the electric adjustment dial inside as well). And what is the best way you recommend to check headlight alignment to MOT standards?

    Many thanks,
    Michael

    Hi AL3X,

Basically in the end, it was only the relay causing the problem, nothing else; it just wasn't working at all, meaning the indicators didn't work when you pressed the lever. But this was after it worked increasingly intermittently where it would work fine and then it would randomly stop, before going again.

I got a replacement from a scrappy and it works perfectly again

Thats exactly the symptoms of mine mate, works intermittently but it seems more often that it doesn't work now, I can hear the relay clicking even though its not working?

Yep, think your best bet is to replace it. I got a used one for just over a fiver

Cheers mate, i'll try that .
