Gearbox leaking oil!!!

  1. #1
    Ahoy hoy,

i have noticed little oil droplets on car parks where i had driven, but only when its raining or wet, so there must be much coming out, just a little drop here and there as the wet surface makes it stand out more

i had a quick look under the car, and everything looked fine, then i saw the bottom of the gearbox had oil on it.

i think the oil is coming from there, not just dripping off it coz it stinks. and am told that gearbox oil does smell bad.

Looks like its coming from the split... but it was dark, so gonna have a proper look 2moz.

is there a gasket in there or something that will be reletivly cheap to fix? or is it gonna cost me big?

any1 had this? any help is very much appreciated

    cheers guys

i had this and thought exactly the same found out in the end it was leaking from the driveshaft oil seal.
  3. #3
hmmm. that kinda makes sense. i had a new DS put on about 3 months ago. maybe its been doing it all this time!

damn, wish i would of noticed sooner. no way they will fix it for free now.

another person has to pay out for some1 elses shoddy workmanship
  4. #4
alot of places when doing your drive shafts will just use your old seals and not put new ones so probly need changing
  5. #5
My sump was leaking and it ran down the gearbox, maybe that?
  6. #6
hmmm, thanks. some food for thought here for sure.

like i say its cold and dark right now. so when the dalylight come 2moz, i will jack her up and check these things.

should be fairly obvious where its coming from i reck. if not i will scrub it all clean and check the next day.

will post pics once i have checked it out

thanks for the advice already guys

P.S: Ashbuster. that Sax looks the SEX in lime green!

how much did the re-spray set you back?

    looks the bees balls

gearbox oil stinks as you said. makes me reach everytime i smell it its very pungent.

If its gearbox oil then its likely to be four places.

    1) Input shaft seal (think this is possible?)
    2) Driveshaft seals
    3) Gearbox filler plug
    4) Gearbox drain plug

When i changed my driveshaft it was leaking and the cause was the drain plug wasnt tightened fully, but my friends is leaking after he changed his driveshaft and its leaking from the seal. Could be either

thanks man. i will have a look under 2moz and get my scooby doo hat on and try and solve this mystery!

will give everything a tighten up,. just incase and clean the affected area up. see how that works. but wont knwo any more til 2moz. thanks for the tips. will check back with you guys 2moz and let you know how i got on

    thanks

hmmm upon further inspection in the light, looks like i was wrong all along!

is this the back end of the gearbox? or the clutch?

i am a novice with this shit

and also lots of oil leak on the bottom of my sump

give it a good cleaning... and took her for a spin, nothing as of yet. will be going out again later so who knows!
  10. #10
Yea i'd say drivrshaft seal. Mine looked like that and thats what was wrong, seals are ment to be replaced at the same time as the driveshaft but nobody told me that either
  11. #11
right after the cleaning i took it for a spin, got back and checked.. i had wet oil coming from here...

easy fix? is there a gasket there or something?

    indicated by blue line...

you know you are loving my photoshop skills!! lol

Also... in my 1st pic... what is that? rear of gearbox or clutch or something?

    bad news that then.

re-sprays far too expensive. not worth it for the cash the cars worth in my eyes. but would look fresh as fuck.

Looks like DS seal to me, to be honest whoever fitted the DS should of put new seals in, they always get knocked and moved when changing shafts.

Its probably an hours worth of work, seals are about £7 a pair, just make sure you get some good new fluid (Pug/Cit fluid is best) and get a new plug/gasket.

    blue line is sump gasket

in the first pic it look likes the diff casing on the rear of the box from underneath, looks like your driveshaft seal has gone too tbh

for the sake of the extra few quid i would replace them aswell if your doing the work yourself mate
  18. #18
Isn't a hard job to do yourself if you have the tools.

    Hub nuts off
    Bottom balljoint off
Swing hub round and pull shaft out of hub
    Slide shaft out of gearbox
Carefully prise old DS Seal out and place new one in (the right way round)
    Carefully slide DS back in
Swing hub round and put shaft into it
    Bottom balljoint back on
    Hub nut done up.

Drivers side is virtually identical but dont forget about the intermediate bearing. Think they are 11mm nuts which you need to loosen, you'll need a deep socket for them

thanks guys... i will be tackling the job myselfg more than likely.

gonna replace the sump gasket 1st as thats a quick job.. see if that fixes it, and check the DS seals while its on axle stands.

will get on to this at the end of the month when i got some funds.. thanks again guys

Use a sealer on the sump instead of a gasket as TU lumps dont use gaskets from factory
  21. #21
i just spoke to the garage who fitted the NSF DS as they said i got a 6 months warranty on the parts and labour, so they told me to bring it in for a check over.

so let them do there bit for free, then i will change what ever else needs doing after that!

    thanks peeps

    Peace n Love xxx
