PAS pump

  1. #1
Last night when i started the car up, the steering would harldy turn, started trying to turn it for about 5 mints, then it suddenly came on.

    what could have caused this?
  2. #2
the brushes stick in the pump motor then they die
'give it sharp tap most times it works for a while
  3. #3
its not the brushes mate, its a fairly new pump, as the brushes went on my last one, so i know what its like when the brushes stick.

it could be the ignition barrel not producing enough power for the motor any more happens quite a lot you can test it by using the guide on here if it works then its the barrel. and just get a new barrel or bridge the wires with a thick wire and 2 crimp on connectors.

hi, i've looked at a guide, but it says only to do as you say if you have problems with, PAS, rear demister and something else, my problem was just with the PAS.

has been working fine today, but still doesn't quite feel like PAS should.

just been out in car, its now making that squeeling noise, however it gets quieter and louder when i turn on/off anything electrical in the car :s

your alt belt is going this could cause the lack of pas aswell because the pas pump is powerd by the alternator
  9. #9
My guess would be the alternator aswell.
  10. #10
    these easy to change?

That is the biggest load of cods wallop I have ever heard.
Saxo PAS is electric therefore has it's own electric motor to turn the pump impellers. It is not mechanically driven off the engine, just for your future reference.

Have you checked the relay? Could be a sticky relay.

Check the wiring for any lose plugs/wiring etc.

Ok just checked, couldn't find an actual wiring diagram for the power steering pump, but thinking about it, it might not have a relay

When your car is started, you haven't got a battery light up etc?

Also next time you start it and it does it see if your heated rear screen and/or heater fan works.

If it the latter then maybe the ign barrel.

The squeeling noise is probs the alt belt.

starts as normal, steering wont turn at all, drive forward abit then the steering comes on but quite heavy.
the heaters and demister work, however when i turn them on the noise from the PAS pump starts.

Its not the belt, its coming from the PAS pump, like it does when its on its way out.

Its a fairly new pump though, so surely not on its way out?

    fed up with saxo lol

If you got it recently refurbed i'd take it off and send it back and ask for a refund as it sounds like they didn't refurb it properly and the brushes are worn/sticking. Or could be impeller bearings.

it wasnt refurbed, i bought it of a saxo with low mileage. the PAS looks new.

how much should a garage charge to refurb a PAS pump?

I don't know how much a garage would charge, but any kind of auto factor will sell you one but it's on a exchange basis.

    I'd say it was brushes.

You might be able to refurb it yourself if you can get a kit or atleast the brushes.

my power steering started going heavy a while ago, and it started going and i had to play with the wheel to kick in
then after a while it went and came back then it went completly and had to hit the pump itself to get it working
then after a couple weeks it went completly
i thought the pump was nakard but apparently it might not be
anyone got any ideas what else it could be?
