jacking point

  1. #1
I did a search, few dead good threads on it but still have a question. In the diagram...

Where I've put jack/axle...that round bit, that can take either? also...where the user I stole this off has put the red circle...thats a wishbone isn't it? surely thats not safe putting an axle stand there!? I'd of thought I could jack the car at the circular thing I've pointed towards, or jack it in the close proximity to that then use the circular thing to put the axle stand, yes yes?

Why don't you just use the normal jacking points? They are where the little arrows are on the skirts!
  3. #3
Usually I jack it up on the gearbox and put the axle stands under the wishbones (red circle in above pic) or under the jacking points.

Unless I'm being very blind...I followed the arrows (I'm not stupid, trust me) and there wasn't ANYTHING underneath indicating how far into the underside of the car you should go. This isn't something I'm willing to trial and error considering the damage/injury that can be caused with it, so bare with the fact I'm trying to learn and offer some assistance or take the easier route and don't comment.

    Car ramps.

look at the arrows, now look directly behind the side skirts and there's a sill with two notches in it. Jack inbetween the notches.

Or as said use car ramps. Much safer.

And here we have a straight forward answer. Thanks matey, will use this info this weekend when I'm changing over brake discs and such.

No probs john, i'd recommend putting a small block of wood between the jack and the car when lifting on the sills. It just saves them bending etc just make sure it's secure!! Last thing you want is the block slipping!

Will do, I'll jack it up there, then can I use the axle stands at the circular point I've written 'jack/axle' underneath?
  11. #11
Flat bar and a couple of rough mig welds and you have your own axle stands and car ramps, i made them myself.
  12. #12
The only bad point about jacking using wood between the metal is the cracking of the wood, makes me think that the floor is going to go out the car!
  13. #13
It looked a little different on mine (slightly rustier) but i think i'm looking at the same area that i used to use. So yep i would say so.

If your floor caves in however dont hold me responsible
  14. #14
    haha ok!
  15. #15
Don't jack from there, you'll weaken and bend the floor, which will lead to rust, which will lead to welding.

    Use the jacking points.
  16. #16
so if you jack using the jacking points where would you put the axel stand?
and dont say jacking point because thats where your jack would be at the moment
just wondering how you guys do it
  17. #17
Personally, I used to put them on the wishbone mounts.
  18. #18
Poke it with a screwdriver if it doesnt make a hole fire an axle stand under it

Okey doke, was just a bit worried that it wouldn't be strong enough/could damage it.

I wasn't saying you were stupid After jacking from there myself and looking where the arrows pointed I thought it was pretty self explanatory, so not a pointless comment it was actually your answer?

Jack it up on the wishbone mounts or gearbox then put the axle stands and a block of wood under the 2 jacking points.

Not really self explanatory, the arrows simply indicate the area to jack/axle stand...nothing specific. Considering the dangers of jacking/axle standing that can arise, I'd rather be VERY certain as to where I'd place them, damaging myself or the car through trial and error simply isn't an option.

Haha, listen...I've taken no offence or anything, your first response seemed to indicate my question was pointless. I just like to make sure I'm doing things right so I don't come back on here asking how to fix my rib cage/a big hole I've put in the floor of my car.

    Mates?
  25. #25
Aha mates get the car in the air in the end?
  26. #26
Nah I'm in work, gave it a go on Sunday when I was fitting my sub and amp but it was making horrible creaking noises (the road I'm on has a slight camber) so let it down and thought I'd give it another go this weekend but with the car in reverse if you get me, so the angle it's sitting at when raised isn't as declined...more of an incline. Simply can't afford to have my car off the road atm, live just far enough away from work to need it and it's a new job so I'm on the impress offensive!
  27. #27
Oh and what do you think to the pedestrianisation of Norwich city center?

  28. #28
Aha I hate jacking mine up tbh specially when it starts creaking or making noises! And LOL aha i think from a pedestrians point of view it's brilliant! Aha

she probly used that method lol
