Important! : Valves and pistons hitting together.

hi there just stripped down an engine and took off the cylinder head, and took it off the block and now have seen where the valves have made a dent in the pistons it was just the inlet ones can anyone tell me what i have to do next, do i just need to buy new valves or pistons as well? why has it done this? is it the timing that someone hasn't done right?

    Which engine is it?

    Pics?

If its 1.6 16V (VTS or GTi) engine then there is very slight notches in the pistons.

Obviously if some are larger than others or they look noticeably battered then thats not normal

Theyre more noticeable on one side (cant remember if its inlet or outlet) but there is very small notches on the opposite side too which probably wont be noticeable at first glance if the top of the pistons have too much dirt/sooty residue on them

if valves have made contact you might be lucky

my mates cambelt slipped a tooth and his valves dented the pistons, but he managed to just get new valves fitted and then re fitted the head and car runs fine

Yer normal the pistons will be ok as the valves will bend first so normal the valves need sorting.

But if a vts then the inlet side have the groves
