Clunking under braking

  1. #1
    Looking for some help please.
slid my car sideways into a kerb at the the end of November due to the ice and snow, had to replace rear axle and have been having trouble with the front end, There is a clunking coming from the nearside when I brake. I've changed both driveshafts, had new discs and pads, new wheel bearing on the nearside and had tracking and balancing done. I found that after about a week of the new discs and pads being fitted that a clunking was coming from the nearside, at first I thought it was a CV joint, hence why I replaced the driveshafts, this didn't stop the clunking and I then found the new brake disc was warped. I've replaced the warped brake disc and the clunking is still there. I also find that the clunking can be at low speed and that when braking it vibrates through the pedal. Any ideas as to what it could be?

    Thanks,
    Mozza

    Wishbone,bottom ball joint maybe.

I've had the car up on some ramps with a mechanic I know and there is nothing that you can see that is damaged. I'm starting to wonder after all the money I have spent on it that it might be something really obvious? Would a dodgy brake pad cause this sort of problem?

I wouldn`t say dodgy brake pad as such maybe if the brake pad hasn`t been fitted correctly ie the rattle spring or the guide pin is loose.

Yeah i wouldnt have thought so either but its definately on the drive (its sort of a rotary sound that slows down as the car does) and as I've done the driveshafts and whatever else, i'm at a loss of what to say it could be! Really starting to bug me now! Haha

Maybe a stone between the disc and pad.

I don't think so cus I have had the callipers off a fair few times and havent noticed anything! I took it into a Euro services car place that works on them all the time and they cant think of what it could be, its so irritating! Just dunno what is worth checking any more? Ever heard of a problem like this before?

Just a thought have you have checked where the strut goes into the suspension turret to make sure its all tight?

Looking for something obvious, possibly the caliper hasnt been torqued up properly to the strut? Could be the anti roll bar bush- that causes a knocking, possibly triggered by the tyre being slightly warped causing drag and it knocks with every revolution.

Just trying to think of something. When a wheel bolts are loose it will cause a knocking that baffles garages, but you've had the wheel off a few times?

The calipers have been off a few times just to check, and the wheels have been on and off and torqued up every time! Hmm not sure on the anti roll bar bushes, how would i check? it doesnt do it all of the time, just most of the times when i'm braking!

Yeah i've had the complete strut off to check and fitted it back on, all nice and tight there!

The ARB bush fits on the end of the ARB and inside the clamp on the top of the wishbone. If its loose it nocks, mine used to do it when going over a rough road. You are supposed to stick a crowbar in and look for movement, prob you couldnt tell anything. but they are cheap so might as well just stick a new one on anyway

Maybe its the strut itself that fukced. The top half was turned round while dismantling to reveal wear. Dunno just guessing

The mechanic I was working with had a look when we took the strut off and decided it was okay, the bearing in the top has got some play in but that is a different noise, do you still think it could be the bushes?

My bets on the top bearing, if theres play and a if a mechanic says that its alright its guaranteed to be not alright

Haha i know it needs changing but would this cause the brake pedal to keep vibrating and practically pushing back at me? Its confusing me big time, i've spent so much time with my car on the ramps just lately, that i barely remember what it actually is supposed to drive like!!

You didnt say that at the beginning- was it a secret or something?

It mystifies me why members come on here asking for help but can't be arsed to give the full information.

I cant be arsed to answer any more

I did say that at the beginning, if you read my very first comment is says that I could feel it vibrating through the pedal.

Have you checked the engine mounts? That would cause vibration.

you didnt say that about it pushing back at you- that suggests warped discs, which will cause a clunking as the brake pads are juggled about

no i havent, would that be just under braking? probably worth checking anyway!!! doing my head in slowly but surely! Haha!

i've changed the disc, which was warped and its still there, could the disc have damaged the pads? the discs were new, so were the pads, i had a dodgy batch!

Just a quick update on the problem! Have had the car in the garage again! This mechanic is a freind of my dad's so pretty trustworthy, the only thing he can see after stripping the whole of the front end is that there is a lot of play in the N/S strut, he thinks that the bush inside the strut was damaged under impact and that he is 99% sure this is the problem as he can see no other fault!
