Bonnet Re-spray

  1. #1
    Hey all,
Brought my Mk2 VTS posi blue few months back and got it cheaper due to lacquer peel on bonnet...

Trying to find someone breaking the same Mk and colour as would be the cheapest option.
Been struggling to find one so starting to way up my options...
    Do i:
    a) Get my bonnet re-sprayed
    b) Buy a new fibreglass bonnet and get it sprayed

I know the later will be more expensive but will the paint job be cheaper due to being brand new and ready to prime and paint?

Any input will be appreciated ^^

No mate the new bonnet will be around the same price to prime and paint. New bonnets need more paint than old ones and more prep work as you have to paint and prep both sides.

it shouldn't be more than £100 if you prep the bonnet yourself and just get a body shop to spray and bake the bonnet.

if the bonnets just got peal it doset meed primeing, just p800 it to have it down to paint then if needs it abit of paint again not always needed and just reclear coat it all

Personally i would prime it. The reason for this is when you rub down the edge of clear coat with wet and dry paper and paint over the top without priming you can get what they call contouring.
This leaves a line around where the old paint has peeled off and been rubbed back. You can get away with it with a good flat and buff but IMO this is bodging when it only takes 15 min's to prime and prep the bonnet.

Cool, thanks for all the input, sorry for late reply just got back from work. If i do a job i have to do it right... so no bodging for me ^^.

If there's fair bit of prep work to do on the original bonnet do you think it would be easy enough to do the prep work on a new bonnet doing the both sides and priming or are these layers worth doing professionally like the final coats...

if you can afford it i wuld get them to do it all as you will get a better finish as they will have better tools such as blocks and duel action sanders and no mate just re- paint your bonnet not worth a new 1 for clear coat flakeing
