Engine Rebuilding...

  1. #1
    Hi everyone,

I have a complete 106 GTI engine to convert into my VTR. While the engine is out, I want to look into having it rebuilt to a 're manufactured' or 'zero mile' quality to prolong its life and make sure I'll have something reliable. I have had a decent search around on Google and on here, sent a few emails to different manufacturing companies to try and get some answers...

What I'd like to know, even if it is a ball park figure to anyone who has had this done...
    a) How much roughly does this cost,

    b) What sort of time scale should I expect this work to be done,

    c) While the engines in pieces, is it worth doing it properly and getting cams, pistons, throttle bodies etc on the engine?

    d) Who do you recommend (company wise) to do this important work?
(Am based South West UK - Surrey more specifically)

Any helpful replies much appreciated and sorry for the essay..

first thing you need to decide is do you have a budget? as modding isnt cheap, also, will you be doing any of the work yourself, there are alot of members on here and affiliates that could carry out the work for you...... but as said, we need a budget and are you interested in more power from the off?

Budget will be a nudge over 6k maximum, and am definitely interested in power gains - Would like a bigger jump than from a lightly modified phase2 vtr engine to a standard 16v... I have the engine in my possession and have a friend at Citroen who can fit it for me - All I really need to sort is the bits in between.

I will be totally honest - I'd love to do the work myself but I just don't have the experience, space or tools to do so and struggle to fit bulbs

if youve got that much to spend id go turbo, im biased as i like turbos lol, im building a turbo vtr myself, youve got decent enough money to make a decent spec turbo 16v there, up to your peferance, but youll get alot more power then you could with cams/bodies, theres alot of 16v turbo stuff for sale atm at bargain prices too

Turbocharging I would definitely consider - On one of my many travels I have visited the Cituning website, are the 'kits' on there the right way to go? And is it a fairly simple 'bolt on and go' sort of task? (apart from mapping etc)

it is pretty simple other then the mapping, the cituning kits are very good kits, but tbh the dp engineering kits are alot better, and there are 2 diff sellers atm selling brand new dp kits for a chunk cheaper then they are from dp themselves due to not finishing their projects in the sale section, theres alot of forged pistons floating about in there too, aswell as ecu's intercoolers etc,

Just searched DP engineering and am on their website now - Does look very good indeed! Thanks for the help there. Only thing I'm stuck on now - How do I know what engine type I have? TU5-J4 etc... Is from a 1997 T reg 106 GTI if you happen to know off the top of your head.

Hello mate , i just popped into citroen today to pick up some parts for my vtr , just out of interest i asked them how much for a brand new vtr engine ( mine is a phase 1 ) he said exchange on your old unit £ 1500 ( not sure if that inc vat ) then i asked for buying a new unit no exchange and them fitting it this inc new clutch etc he said £3000 ! crikey ! lol , the 1500 option don't sound too bad bearing in mind you have to do all the work yourself , other than that i contacted a london based engine recon service they give me a quote of 1200 to rebuild my old lump ,
    hope this helps

No probs mate , have a look on here someone might be able to help you with the rebuild ! , i used a ford forum afew years back i found a bloke local to me who did rsturbo rebuilds , he did a great job it cost alot less than the big garages and the bits he wasn't able to do he sent of to be machined .
