Hand brake noise

   When my car has been left sitting over night or for a few hours and i get in and put the handbrake down as i drive forward it will make a knock sound? also my EML is on not sure if its jst playing up or if their is a problem, what ever has happend my mpg seems better lol. i wanna get a fault code reader what one do i need? i dont want to spend loads of money
