black top head straight swap with silver top?

  1. #1
whats needed if not? is the black top better?

Late grey tops have different inlet port spacing to early grey and black tops. The early grey top and black top have the same port spacings but have different combustion chambers and if your including the rocker gear, valve springs, cam and so on there different as well..

so i have a 1999 silvertop single plug vtr. If i were to put on a blacktop head, will it be a direct swap? it ht leads etc i think which confused me. isnt the old ht lead/distributor setup not as good as the coilpack setup ive got now as standard on the silvertop?

actually, would it just be more easier to use the blacktop springs in my silvertop? (i will be camming it soon with a ph3)

If your head has a distributor on it then it is not off a VTR. Unless some one has fitted one to it.

oh no it doesnt, i just thought the blacktop had one?

anyone no whats required fitting a blacktop head?

youve got a decent head now, just use blacktop springs or uprated, its only about 70 for piper springs, would cost you about if not more to get a black top set up on yours

This combination is what the stockhatch use. One told me they got near 120bhp with this setup and some other things...which they couldt tell me. Not sure if he was pulling my leg or not though

Most of the quick stock hatch guys are running 120+ from there “standard” VTRs. Though they tend to take it far to seriously and tend to fib to people about what they have actually done. Most of them running last year where running late model grey tops with bit pinched of the early models added. The 106s tended to use tweaked black tops.

I cant remember now whether it was saxmax or stock hatch. Remember him saying the later silvertop type bottom end with the blacktop head, different injectors and something about the gearbox cant remember what though as you cant change the gearing can you to keep to the guidelines. Staight through exhaust too...had the cat there but pushed it all through so it dosent actually do anything.

just so i know why is it better to use the old black top head over the early silvertop?

if your fitting another head id go for a 1.6 xsi or rallye head along with the s1 rallye inlet, loom and ecu

Solid lifters is the main advantage.

yeah they did. apparently its a different one for a blacktop and silvertop. i just thought it might be beneficial to pick up a cheap blacktop and fit that, but i cant really be asked with it now
