Peugeot 206 GTI?

  1. #1
Why are the 206 GTI180s considered such bad / slow cars? On paper they seem fantastic:

    Engine Size: 1997 cc
    Power : 180 bhp
    0-60: 7.2 s
    Top Speed: 140 mph

A 2.0 with 180bhp seems very good? What makes people say they are the "Worst GTI badged car ever" and that they are slow compared with what you would expect?

    Thanks in advance.

They are quite heavy for a hatchback and you will never find one that is actually 180bhp because they didnt even make 180 out of the factory

Because in over 10 years they made it no better than the 306.

All of the advances in technology that others found Peugeot seemed to loose.

180 if your lucky it will make 165 in real terms, thus making it no better than a gti-6.

The gti-6 handled better, trim levels and 6 speed gearbox was better, basically they tried to fill a gap and make it on par with a 172 and failed as it was to little to late.

The 172 had the market killed by then plus the 180 was to soft, the Pug enthusiast wanted more than the 206 could deliver.

It's a shame as the 206 was a very pretty car, but they made the mistake with the 130 that pushed purists to look else where.

    I would buy a 306 GTi-6/Rallye if I was looking at 206 GTi 180's

The GTI 180 was not so bad. Nice engine in my books. The old 206 GTI was what gave the 206 its bad name. It was so down on power it was silly. So the 206 GTI 180 just got stamped with the same image even though it was not bad for a modern hot hatch.

The 206 chassis is actually quite good. It never bettered the 205 or the 306 so its overshadowed somewhat.

    P206 180 - 173 Stone

    Not really that heavy...

& the Clio's have the same issue with power.

Trim levels better than the 180!? Gearbox definitely though.

I haven't seen many make under 165, would have to be a badly maintained or weak engine to produce much lower.

I agree with some of your points, but I guess I'm blinded by my love for them, personally I think they are much better than they get credit for & i'd MUCH rather one than a Clio RS, even if they do have the edge.

306 does look nice but, it's just too dated for me.

Fully agree with what you said, the front seats in the 180 were the dogs bollocks!

One of my mates had one for a first and can remember being put in the back of my seat unexpectedly was suprised how quick it was and remember seeing it top out at 145 (on a private road of course i do not condone speeding in any way ) and even with speedos being as out as they are guaranteed at least 130+ ! definetly not slow at all and an under rated car

Pics will now work, fucking 02 pay as you go internet, you have to 'shift R' to view pics @ their best and it adds more to the URL.

    Thanks, the general spec is great;

    6CD Autochanger
    Climate control
    Auto Wipers
    Auto Headlamps
Leather, Alacantra bucket style sports seats (can be lowered, tilted, raised, backwards forwards ect)
    17" alloys
    & more

The chassis isn't as bad as made out either theres lots of after market goodies from France available too & lots of people track their Gti's and rally them. They are no slower than a 182, it's down to driving ability but just not as good out of the box handling wise.

I love my second one lol

I loved my gti180 to bits, and i wouldn't say their exactly slow, when i first got it, it basically standard, apart from a powerflow exhaust, big k&n, but buy the time i sold it with cams, remap etc, it flew!!

It's the boggo GTi (130? 138?) that gets called the POS GTi that shouldn't be a GTi cause it's crap.

Although, I argue the 'worst GTi badged car ever', with the Mk3 Golf...
  12. #12
the mk3 golf is definately the worst gti ever,,,,,,,,

however the gti180 isnt that bad, the engine is reasonable when the oil problems are sorted, but the chassis and overall build dont come close to the mighty gti6! ive had my 6 for years now and its still a very capable car, and its now making just over book power with 130k on it with just a magnex and homespun induction kit.
and the noise........ well thats something else.
  13. #13
All of you saying worst GTi ever, have none of you considered the mk5 ford escort gti?
  14. #14
Don't get much more speed for the extra 40bhp as the 138 gti has top speed of 134mph in my eyes not worth the extra cash

How often do you go over 100mph though? Acceleration is what you want imo
  16. #16
Trust me the 138 is rapid enough and cheaper to insure won't deny the 180 are better looking

    I miss my 138 :-(

206 looks a bit of a girls car but the 180's are cool.. only thing that bugs me about them is with 17's they always look like they will tip over any minute lol

Step up from a KA imo

I would have a Gti180 over the equivilent Clio anyday. Not so much a common car around here and they are starting to become a bit of a bargain price wise..

My mate had 1 for a few months and it was a really good car.On paper they dont seem quick, but on the road they go very well.

The 1 my mate had,we didnt really look into it,but it deffo wasnt standard.Exhaust had been changed and it was a tad lower but we reckon it was at least re-mapped.It used to be on par with CTRs and it used to trounce a local lads Gti180.Difference between the 2 was like night and day.

At the time i had a Mk3 Astra Gsi with a V6 with some mods, probably pushing 190+bhp and the 180 wasn't as far behind as it should have been.

180's are shit loads quicker & does around 140-145, a 138 is slower than a Fiesta ST!

It would have come from an ex 138 owner lol, theres hardly anything in it price wise between a 'good' 138 and a good 180, due to the insurance.

I'd never consider a 138, sooner my VTS tbh lol
