Engine keeps stalling?

  1. #1
Just bought a non runner 2000 vtr. The owner said she just came up to a junction one day and lost all power and had to have it towed home. When you try to start the engine it will start & run with your foot on the accelerator but as soon as you take it off the revs just die and the engine stalls!

    Any ideas?

    cheers iain

i would have guessed some thing to do with the trottle body or icv and check that the throttle is being pressed down in the engine by a bolt, so it holds the revs on 1k

Could be something small also like a blocked fuel filter/lazy fuel pump.

yup but as he said the woman said it just died while driving ? so sureley it would not get blocked while driving ? if it is this just turn the key and get some one to pull the fuel line that goes into the throttle bodys to see if the fuel pushes out, also make sure the red fuel cut off is pressed down

Still could get blocked while driving if there is crap/dirt in the fuel tank thats getting syphoned up through the fuel lines, don`t forget saxo`s are fairly old car`s now

Yup true it would only be like drinking you coke then abit of ice gets stuck but i. These early stages badically you cant rule nothing out so i guess just check everything mate a bit long but you will find it.

Give it a full service changing all the filters and oil then change the ICV.

just though any way it wont be a fuel pump or the fuel ect because the engine runs with foot on the gas, so it must be something to do with the accelerator cable by throttle or the throttle body or icv thats where i would start mate,

    any luck ?

Idle control valve or throttle body the first place to start then? I was thinking a coilpack problem? As said dont think its gonna be a fueling problem because as i mentioned it will run when you put your foot on the accelerator and rev it. So surley if it was a lack of fuel it would die when i put my foot down and be ok at idle?
I get the car delivered mid next week just wanted some pointers where to start. By any chance is the IDV located towards the top of the engine near the rocker cover, air filter housing etc?
Any other sensors I should be looking at?

    cheers

Got the car dropped off tonight. Car runs ok at the moment so it's only an intermediate problem. Only thing that stood out was maybe a whining/whisling from below the airbox & above the fuel rail. I'm thinking maybe an air leak?

car wants to stall unless u hold the revs at around 1.5-2k when started from which im guessing is somewhere near idle. Every know & then the revs suddenly drop until its warmed up then it becomes more consistent.

I encountered the same problem tonight, going to take it to the garage to see what they say

could be the map sensor faulty?

i had sorta the same problem with my vts, didnt totally die but idled

*REALLY bad (sorry about 2 posts, my laptop messed up)
try checking the idle control valve, fuel filter and maybe it just needs a good service.

Had an idling issue with mine a few weeks back, she would either just drop revs and die, or sit at around 1.5 - 2k revs.

decided to have a poke around and found The Idle Control Valve was blocked with carbon so cleared the ingoing pipes and everything was back to normal.

Did you ever find the cure for this anyone??? Please

Id still put it down to ICV or throttle body. the amount of carbon build up can be abit much tbh. also.. i believe the EGR valve ( i believe its called ) sometimes needs a good clean.

Ever since i cleaned my ICV, throttle body ive not had the problem. only issue i really have is the sax not liking reverse much. but i rarely go backwards so who cares about that

I cleaned mine and bought another one and tried that........ still no joy.

    Anyone else????

the ICV or the throttle body? or the egr valve?

    How olds your car?

I found quite abit of wear on my throttle body so replaced the disc inside (as had one in boot ) and the wear with chemical metal becasue i was stuck at work and had only adsa at hand.

EGR valves seem to be stupid expensive from GSF so was glad abit of tinkering fixed it.

i would try checking everything for carbon build up, pipes etc. might help. failing that i guess its finding a guarage that knows there shit to hunt down the issue.

Its an 02 furio 16v. I have replaced the hole throttle body with one off a vts the same year that had been rolled, the engine was still a runner so now im lost there is no sensor left to change it must be the ecu.
