vtr fuel gadge

hi everyone , i bought a v reg facelift saxo vtr and i am having problems with the fuel gadge , when the gadge gets it between quarter and empty the car runs out of fuel , i lifted the rear seat and someone has put in a extra wire from the number 2 wire from the fuel pump ( the blue wire ) also when driving alone now and again the fuel gadge will drom 2 empty then back up again , and ideas

Fuel gauge sender unit - its on the pump housing in the fuel tank.

Easy to replace with another from a scrappy.

what will the extra wire be for ? also on the plug onto the pump it has numbers 1 - 5 and on number 3 there is no wire , is there ment to be 1

Looks like pin 3 is supposed to be disconnected;

Well.. Blue is +'ive feed for the fuel pump, Yellow/Green is earth for fuel pump, Green is bridged earth, so I assume that Pink is the fuel sender gauge wire. (Haynes just showing fuel gauge wired to dash)

Have a look further up the the loom and see if it has broken off. (Remember mine is Mk.1, so wiring may be different - I doubt it though)
