cat 708 issue

have fitted cat 708 to my vts today, only i couldnt turn the engine over by hand. thought valves was touching pistons so retarded inlet as that was the offending cam.

strip down for further inspection shows one of the lobes on the inlet cam is catching on the head just near the lifter on piston 4.

i did try re-seating the cam but no joy.

i have overcome the issue now, car is not built or running as ive spent 13hours on this today. im sat in bed resting

does this happen a lot with the cat cams?

also the cam seals... they need to be pressed right back in there recess?

cam seals should be seated hard against the reccess collar, was this the reason it wasnt seating properly?

nope, lump of slag on the outer part of lobe.

ahhhh i see, not had much experience with catcams so cant help much there(would have thought it would just be a PDI mistake), but the bearings should be seated right back to seal properly, same with most other bearings and seals around most engines, they may not look right because they dont sit flush with the reccess face in most cases.... but thats just the way theyre made

yeah i noticed that they dont sit perfectly central.

also noticed that my cambelt tensioner had play in it. went to A.E cook for a new one and the new ones have same amount of play in them. thought theyd be snug. strange.

theyre supposed to have a small amount of play to account for the belt moving a little across the pulleys,

never seen this something wrong with how youare building it up . sure you have ot got inelt in ex side and the rough boss is catching on web in middle of head?
cam seals SHOULD NOT be tight back as you will possibly block the oil drain hole at bottom ,they should be flush with taper on outside of locating area

seals? you must be joking! i have to strip it down again!

when ive fit the cam seals i have droped the cam in place with the seal on the cam. yes i have pressed it in but not forced it in. i was considering pressing it in with a socket before nipping up the ladders.

john! ive just read the haynes on how to change the cam seals. i remove cambelt, pullys and but dont need to disturb the cams or ladders? i screw x2 self tapping screws onto the oldcam seals and replace with new.

taken from manual,

"press them till they seat on its locating sholder"

i would of presumed that it would be all the way in but i do trust you know what you are talking about.

can you confirm i dont need to strip laders down again, takes ages cleaning off the messy sealent.

hhmmmm ive always know them to be sseated right back.... did not know there was on oil drain there on the vts..... reading what was quoted also points me to believe what i ave previousley, but john does have alot more experience with these engines..... i do apologise if i was wrong

there is an oil drain hole on them, what i tend to do is use the old seals to push the new seals in, no you dont need to strip down again however u will damage the seals taking them out, so will need a new set.

im quite surprised this hasnt been brought up on the club before, i did a good search before posting.
