looking to get some raceland coilovers was wondering if anyone has a set and what they like?
coilovers
-
#1
-
#2from what i have heard on here is you may aswell get ur money and burn it than buy them
-
#3shit want to lower my car bit more than it is (55mm) but cant really afford much at the moment
-
#460mm lowering springs can be bought for £30 or so, steer clear of cheap coilovers u'll have nothing but problems with anything under £350 new
-
#5want it lower then that lol not fussed about thrashing it just want something low and wide lol
-
#6You get two problem on most setups including the Raceland. 50mm you are already on the bump stops. Second if you go very low the dampers are that long that springs come out of there seats when your suspension unloads.
-
#7my mate has a 106 gti and he has his coilovers on the lowest setting and they havent gave him any problems so far so will risk going lower
-
#8they may be beter coilovers than racelands. Or he isnt aware of the problems.. they really are dangerous.Quote:my mate has a 106 gti and he has his coilovers on the lowest setting and they havent gave him any problems so far so will risk going lower
tbh if it was between chopped down springs and racelands, id honestly go for cut down springs. -
#9they are vmax i think on his
-
#10rebranded racelands..
-
#11whats the best to go for then?
-
#12On a budget Gaz GHAs, I belive there is a group buy for them right now on here.
Or make your own
-
#13how would i go about making my own lol not the most brighest spark lol yeah they are at £370 would need to save up for some i reckon
-
#14Wont come much cheaper than that mate.
To make your own you will need:
Dampers
Springs £50
Helper springs £55
Double spring adapter £30
Coilover conversion kit £25 each side
Top Mounts £110
So works out near to the Gaz kit...which comes with rear dampers too, although theyre a high lb at 300lb, standard is around 110lb spax /apex around 115lb so as you can see 300lb is ALOT more. -
#15that is just numbers to me lol english please
lol told you im thick lol

Ok basically, you have your strut and obviously your spring. To keep your spring tensioned and not flying everywhere you have spring pans which the springs sit between.
You weld a threaded coller onto the strut fro the bottom spring pan to thread onto allowing the adjustability...

you have your spring, then another spring pan and then a helper and finally another spring pan to keep them all together.

on top of the top spring pan, you have the top mount which connects to the car with the 3 bolts you see from the engine bay:

The damper is in the strut and a cap holding it in...on the top of the damper is a thread for the top mount. This holds everything together and onto the car.
Quite hard to understan without seeing it all in front of you if you havnt got a clue in the first palce -
#17my brother is a mechanic and my mums bloke builds custom bikes so they will have more of a clue how much would someone charge to build them lol
-
#18No one usually pays anyone to build them. Usually if you are aware and know what parts you need then its easy to work out. Only bit of skill needed is welding for the threaded coller
-
#19well mums bloke is a mint welder its his job lol where can you get all the parts from?
-
#20Dampers whichever you want...
Rally Design for the coilover kit and Rally design springs.
Demon Tweaks for the faulkner helpers
Faulkner direct for the springs
OBP used to stock compbrake topmounts, may have to search on that now.
Merlin motorsport for the faulkner spring doubler.
Once you work it out and if you decide to go ahead with it, if you are unsure on spring lb and sizes come back to saxp or research
-
#21Danny. In that pic above. are your dampers fully extended? as the helpers seem to be fully compressed when the dampers are unloaded
-
#22Fully extended and the helpers are fully compressed too. That was the first set I built and only had guidelines on what lengths to use (which ended up being wrong lol) bit of experimenting and ive got it sorted nowQuote:Danny. ...tarmac dampers too so slightly shorter.
-
#23what spring length did you have in the picture of the complete strut mate?
and what rate did you settle on, i may end up taking my bare strut to rallydesign and seeing how it all goes together and picking a length when im there. my garage is literally 2minutes from them luckily.... -
#24Length in that pic was 5" or 6" with a 2" helper..I think, I reaclly can not remember now.
Im using 325lb springs now on PugSport Grpn Tarmac Dampers. -
#26yep vmaxx are shit had them on my megane had 2 use 20mm spacers on a standard steel wheel and they used 2 knock like fuck lol
