Im in the process of buying a new head, which has been cammed adn had some gasflow work on it. it is a 51 vtr head, going on a 2001 vtr bottom end, what sort of bhp gains could i expect to see from this ??
New head

#2not much tbh, if its been cammed you will have 2 get your ecu remapped
-
#3yeah i thought that may be the case, im probably going to get it re-timed 1st.
-
#4Tbh mate(not having a go)its like saying how long is a piece of string?,it depends on a lot of things how well the works been carried out etc.
Steve. -
#5Depends on the camshaft. I would take 'gasflow work' with a pinch of salt unless it's been performed by someone like Sandy, QEP, GMC etc.
I fitted a Kent PT40 (pretty close to Newman PH3 spec) to my 52 VTR and had the timing adjusted on the rollers - gained 8bhp. Wasn't worth the effort imo. -
#6yeah its a kent pt14 cam 266 degree. i can get the work done buy my mate as he is a mechanic so cost isnt to bad. 8 bhp isnt bad as i dont want to create a monster, just have a little bit more poke.
-
#7yeah steve i see your point, im not to clued up on engine preformance so im just seeing if there are any definate benifits. Cheers
-
#8I would save your money mate. Once you get over the placebo effect, it's no quicker tbh. A lad on here recently fitted a PH3 to his 98bhp VTR and couldn't get it through an emissions test, ended up taking the head off again and putting the standard cam back in.
-
#9is it a common problem with emissions ?? i need a new head as it is so it comming with a cam is a bonus.
-
#10Definitely hassle you want to avoid!!
-
#11surley if you get so many problem people would avoid cams ??
-
#12Don't see the point of cams unless you plan to itb or turbo later, 8bhp for like £500+. hardly value for money is it...you could probably get a decent vts engine and get it fitted for a little over that and that's 20bhp gain. Also pointless IMO but then I'm older so would just get a more powerful....and reliable car lol
-
#13Vts lump in it ftw
-
#14i dont see the point in swapping engines, i know that sounds stupid lol. im probably going to bodie it next year so im looking at taking steps towards that.
-
#15Swapping to a VTS engine will mean you have gained 20 bhp with an unmodified engine. You will then be able to add Throttle boddies etc and be 20bhp up on what you were with a VTR
