Important! : whiney sorta noise - edit - found the fault

  1. #1
ok guys my car has started making this whiney noise and its getting worse

the noise starts when the car is in 4th gear. doing around 3k rpm.. if i stop accelerating and the revs come down the noise starts. noise goes away when i accelerate but comes back if the revs slow down or hold it at 2-3k revs steady.
the noise is a constant whine. doesnt change tone or pitch and doesnt matter what speed the car is doing (30mph and above)
below 30mph in 1st 2nd or 3rd it seems fine.

if doing say 40mph. and i push the clutch pedal down. the noise is there. but goes away when i bring the clutch back up and accelerate.

the noise is louder inside the car than it is from the outside..

Any help would be appreciated - cheers, Dan.

    update bump:

The noise deffinately only starts at 40mph+
And theres alot of vibration through the floor of the car

At slow speeds 5-10mph theres a very faint rubbing/squeeling noise which is getting louder the more i use the car. sounds like a couple of squirrels having a fight lol

Any suggestions? where to start looking for a fault?
    please help

so its whining on overrun? where bouts is the noise coming from?

without listening to it i cant really diagnose anything but theres some stuff you can check or consider anyway.

first thing, check your gearbox oil level. if its getting worse maybe your gearbox has a slow oil leak? ive seen it at work before where vehicles have leaked oil from their gearbox, and this whining is experienced and gradually gets worse the lower the oil level gets, until the box runs out of oil and rips its own arse off. which is the state i get them in XD but yeah check that cos thats what is usually the culprit in overrun, when there is no load on the gearbox.

if it only happens when you dip the clutch then perhaps the clutch release bearing is worn? doubt theres an inspection plate on the botton off the bell housing on saxos like there is on the stuff i work on, its a bit diff lol, but if theres anyway of checking that, have a look XD

failing that get someone to have a listen to the noise, where its coming from, and you will no doubt be able to find out what it is good luck!

    update bump

Been to misses' uncle and he took the car for a drive. and sods law.. it didnt make the noise once!! but driving it home the noise came back..

he jacked the car up and had a look, and the front right cv boot has come lose and is leaking all over everything. i assume the grinding whiney noise is lack of oil in the drive shaft now?

he said to wash all the oil away (its everywhere) and try to get the cv boot back on

hopefully if the weathers nice tomorrow ill have a look
