R to S engine conversation problem/question

What Vts loom will definitely work on my vtr? My car is an s reg vtr. Which Vts loom will plug and play on my vtr? Is keypad a immobiliser loom different from a chip and reader one?
  2. #2
Also will gti ecu work on a Vts loom in a vtr as we are now unaware what unlocked ecu was supplied as it was a s block and gti loom :s

I think it's pretty random with the plugs and connections.
People generally seem to think a loom from the same year will be fine, however, i've had two engines and looms from a 2003 VTR, and they've had a couple of connections different.
If you get all the parts from the same car then you'll know the loom, ecu and engine all go together, then there's just the multiplug from the car to the loom. I believe these are the same for all Mk1's.
Easiest if you get a donor car, and try to use the donors key and immobiliser ring, that way in theory you wont have to get an unlocked ecu.

any mk1 ecu and loom will do the job.but if the gti ecu is single plu it will also work

So are keypad and no keypad car engine loom the same?
Engine is in so getting a donar car isn't an option!
Was supplied with a gti loom and was assured it would be plug and play, but clearly not

immobiliser type doesnt matter no, thats on the interior loom

You might have to swap a few sensors about... But you could probably make it fit. I think the main issue I where the loom plugs into the car at the passenger side of the engine bay.
If it's from the same year/mk car then you should be able to make it work with some switching of sensors etc..

Yeah, I'm ok with changing plugs on sensors etc.
I just want to make sure the plug connection behind the n/s headlight is the same.
The fear with the keypad one is that as much as the keypad is on the interior loom it must go into the engine loom to go to the engine control unit to run the immobiliser!
So will a engine loom off a r plate Vts plug and play behind the headlight?
As I say, swapping connectors and extending wires to sensors isn't really a problem, just don't want poor old Fulch getting another wrong loom and him still not having a car

you need an unlocked ecu anyway so immobiliser will need removing.
in the car you either have a keypad or a chip and box. both of these send a code to the ecu.

Brilliant, just checked and the loom is out a car without a keypad (not that it now matters lol) and off a very similar aged car, so it 'should' be ok! Got a huge list of pin numbers off the vtr so I'll do some quick tests when we pick it up to try to confirm!
We already have an unlocked ecu, but not sure if it's a gti or Vts item.
Is there any difference between the 2?

gti and vts single plugs should be the same
  12. #12
Dont think this will help it terms of your loom, but I have this which may come in handy for future use.

i done same conversion had to change crank sensor and map sensor on the loom i used 1998 vts loom with 1998 gti engine tho

while we're on this subject.... when unlocking a keypad car ecu.... you just unplug the keypad with car running yes? and also, if the car starts without toucking the keypad its already unlocked/removed yes?

    Yes and Yes

the engine lo0om and ecu you have is from a r plate 106 gti
the ecu is unlocked as i had it running in my ax, if the loom doesnt just plug and play you only need to swap the ing live to the double relay

even fiitng it in a 3 plug car only take a few wires to be swapped

Don't really want to get into this arguement on a public forum, but not a single pin on the plug behind the headlight on the VTR lined up with the one on the GTI, also the GTI loom was missing the large feeds to the engine fusebox from the double relay.
Main problem is I had no wiring diagrams for a 106.
    Really must get some lol
Would have spent longer rewiring it, as I know anything is possible and I'm capiable of doing it, but when there is a plug and play loom you can pick up for £40. Seems a waste of a lot of time, especially as I'd only quoted for an engine swap, having been told it'll plug and play.
Also the VTR only has 1 fuel pipe, which isn't a problem, but a surprise lol xx

the loom was how it came out of the 106, i used another loom in my car for the engine, i had mentioned to fulchabout the fuel lines aswell
