Knocking suspension

  1. #1
Recently fitted a lower suspension brace, but going to work today I twatted a speedbump

I now have a knocking noise which sounds like the droplinks but they aren't knocking when I bang them from underneath.

One of them looks a bit tatty but it's doing it's job :/ I noticed the track rod looked a bit shabby too but it seemed to be fine :s

I've checked all the bushes that could be slack and everything seems tight. Only thing that's slack is the girl linkages but they've been pike that since I got the car :/

    Any help ? It's a 2000 Saxo VTS

the drop link looks a little shabbered there, so could be a cause. but i remember looking through an old issue of performance gti, in the issue it contained a part about buying a saxo. on the suspension bit, it referred to a loose spring pan which can cause a knock. it explains that they are pressed in and can come loose. it also says that to cure it, its best to remove the strut and strip it. then weld the pan in place, and rebuild and put back on the car.

Yeah the droplink doesn't look good, would recommend replacing them if the rubber gaitor splits. can pick them up for pennies as well

Im having this problem too! I have noticed that my spring on passenger side isn't sat upto the edge of the pan but it is on the drivers side, wonder if this is causing it.

Whenever a rubber bush like that on the suspension splits that means its time to change it, dont ever leave joints like that on the car.

They are packed with grease so when the rubebr splits it all leaks out and the joints wear excessively inside.

That rubber on that track rod end looks like its on its way out too so id get those changed.

Also have you checked the condition of the joints and their rubbers on the wishbones connecting to the bottom of the struts?

A worn strut top bearing is also the cause of this and the suspension will knock as the strut is turned side to side.

It is worth noting that it will be extremely difficult to judge whether a joint or strut top bearing is the problem or not just from examining it from the outside, not to mention the forces of driving will push the joints harder into knocking positions than your hands ever could.

So basically you just wanna make sure youve never got any split rubbers on your car coz chances are it will create a knock straight away.
