car only revs to 5000

   hi was wondering if anyone could help in neutral my car only revs to 3500 and in gear it revs to 5000 anyone know what may be causin this its a 1999 vtr there is also no eml light come on when driving any help would be great cheers

   When you first turn the ignition on, does the EM light come on for 4 - 5 seconds then go off?

   Mate had a problem similar.. he took it to a garage and they said it was a fuel injection problem. So while he was there he had it serviced. Came out running fine.

   Not sure about the arrows mate, how long have you had the car for? If you've bought it recently, i bet the previous owner removed the EM bulb

   Thats the ECU light, does it come on/stay on whilst the engines running? If so, like Matt said, fuel injection problems

    it comes on 1st click like all lights on dash do and then goes off but the light u showed me doesnt come on at all cheers

    That would be the same light as the EM light then, no idea why Citroen have to be so different and put loads of lines in the middle of the symbol, ive never seen one like that before
    
    It could just be that there is a problem with the rev limiter instead then, not sure what the default limiter is set to on a VTR though

    You'd have to be an idiot to go to Citroen lol, they would probably charge you £100 to change a bulb! Most garages will look at it for free if they think there gonna get something out of you, so you could try ringing around. You could also try posting on the Engine/Performance section, or try giving these guys a ring as they specialise in Saxo's

    Crank position sensor is a usual suspect..
    
    A citroen diognostics will cost more but they give you a more indepth diognosis.

    I think most places have a policy where if theres no fault found you don't pay

    well i can get hold of a diagnostic machine for the price of fuel from york to scarborough and back about a tenner

    Depends on the diognostics theyre using. Alot of small independent garage have a disognostics computer, but it aint the best. You can get one for £40 to buy yourself..
    
    Pay more at a citroen garage and it will show any faults on the ECU aswell as any details about them, its alot more indepth and will tell you more than a small independant garage.
    
    Independant garage charge about £40
    citroen charge like £80-£100ish

    BTW Unplug your battery overnight before doing anything, this will resest the ECU and its error log, so will cure it untill it happens again, if it happens again then get it plugged in

    bit of a update took the battery off over night and it didnt do anything just did same revs to 3500 revs outa gear 5000rpm in gear no eml light comes on either starting to pi** me off now

    Dissconnected and cleaned the crank.position sensor? Try all the free checks first clean sensors n stuff first
