Gearbox Making Loud clunking noise

Right.. I dont know my car parts to well so you will have to forgive me.

Basically, whilst i was driving the other day, i pulled my car out of 5th and the gear lever suddenly felt very loose like it was barely connected to the car.
It has also been making a very loud clunking noise everytime i change gear.
There is also a hissing/scratching noise coming from the left side of the engine whenever the clutch is up.

I honestly don't have any idea what the problem could be, im figuring that i should just change the whole gearbox?
    Any help would be appreciated!

the hissing noise sounds like the clutch release/thrust bearing thats gone so will probs need a new clutch kit (valeo-L.U.K are the only ones worth having)
this could also be why your gears feel shit whilst changing but once the box is off for the bearing then you may aswel change the gear linkages for new o.e ones or a set of uprated kam ones

Thanks for the reply dude (Y)

I had a feeling it could be the the thrust bearing,
I dont know a thing about mechanics though so i'd have to get a garage to do it.
Is it a pricey job to change pretty much the whole gearbox?

should not need the gear box changing unless its nackerd when they have a look at it. should cost you no more than 150- 200 for the clutch kit new linkages and fitting.
