Easiest way to refill transmission oil?

  1. #1
    Hi

Whats the easiest way to refill the transmission oil?

Ive heard its an absolute bastard to do, and Haynes seems to think from below is best (on a lowered car, i cant imagine so)

    Thanks!

You mean just put oil back in ?

Thier is a breather hole on top of the box i just shoved a hose in thier with a funnel and just kept putting more oil in.. It holds 2 litre so you dont have to worry about the level as long as you put a full 2 litre into the box you will be fine

There is a drain plug on the side of the gearbox if you look there is one higher up aswell, if you jack the car up abit and take out the top plug and get a litre bottle of gear oil with the nozel on the top and put a pipe onto it then slide that pipe behind the wheel and lay under the front and put in the hole and simply squeeze the bottle and keep filling the bottle and do it till the gear oil start to run out of the hole the pipe is in and thats that just put the plug in and your off. its fairly simple and easy, i did it on mine and its lowered. Iv got a 106 to change the gearbox on tomorrow.....

just done this on mine, it took a full litre to fil it to that level, strange as i put 2 ltrs in just over a year ago

I still swear by the easiest way to refill the box is to do it by removing the brake light switch (22mm deep) right on top of the gearbox. If your concerned about the level you can still undo the level plug on the side and top it up to that.. but if its completely drained - its 2 litres

I dont a driveshaft on a 10 yesterday and it only took just over a litre and it was full, i always use the bung above the drain plug and put a pipe in and squeeze the bottle until it starts to run out of the hole then whip the bung in and done......

What are you lot on about?

There's a black breather cap on top of the box, just pull it off.

That makes sense, wierd that haynes doesnt mension this.

Obviously you need to put the lower drain plug back in,

I use the upper drain plug, shove the long nozzle from the 1 litre gearbox oil bottle right in but leave a gap for the air and SQUEEZE

    Its very easy i thought

The proper way. Your not ment to refil them from the black cap on the top, you cant but its advised not to.

Thats the first time i've heard that lol. Never had a problem and i've filled hundreds like this.

Iv always been told to do it the way i do it lol and not to do it with the black cap as you can over fill it and its a breather......

Take the upper plug out and fill through the breather. Means you get the level right and don't have to take the arch liner off to get at filling it through the upper plug. Simples.

It's why there's a proper filler plug above the drain plug.

Although, as said, there's no issues with doing it like that, except you can't tell when it's full, without taking the filler plug out, but the clue that it's called a breather is the hint that it's not the official filler hole.

Theres a level plug on the side you can fill it from there, if your struggling could us a hose with a funnel to fill it, should only take 2 litres.

Dont fill it from the top, some idiot had done that with mine before I bought it and it ended up having 5 litres in at and the gearbox is coated in oil.

not a problem if you just pop 2 litres in.

tbh, i did the first one that way, and now i do it under the car as if you're draining the oil first its right there staring you in the face

Filling through the breather hole is probably the easiest way of getting it accurate IMO.

You can have the upper "fill" hole off, yet have the car on the ground as you fill it through the top. As soon as oil trickles from the upper hole. You have the ideal oil level.

if you've gone to the effort of getting to the filler plug, why not fill it through there? seeing as the wheel has to be off or the car jacked up to get to it

I've filled through the filler hole, didnt have to take the wheel orf or jack it up, was a bit fiddly but ok. Also filled thru the breather at the top but noticed a lot of dirt around the breather which I had to clean off carefully so it ended up taking longer. Also filling thru the breather you have to wait until it percolates down to the top hole.

As said, you can get the filler plug off without taking the wheel off, but it's a pain to get the bottle in. Plus the ideal level is taken with the car sat on it's wheels. So simple to fill from the top.

filled mine through the level hole, all good
