Important! : Need a little assistance/advice.

After many months of the motor sat in the drive and having to well... hold my head in shame.. Drive a turq/blue 1.2 clio to work everyday for the last 9 months.. i decided to finish sorting the VTR out and get her back on the road...

After a couple of weeks i lowered her as had to replace whole rear end suspention anyway, replaced rear clusters for smoked ones, refurbed all 4 wheels so they look brand spankers, waxed and polished her all up, full inside and out job courtesy of works materials

I drop her down to MOT station and noticed a little bit more play in gear lever then i remember just assumed it might of been where id been driving the clio for so long so didnt think much of it.

Anyway she flew through MOT with a few advisories ( headlight loose and all the normal mumble jumble ) so was pleased with that since she has been sat a while.

Jumped in her today and noticed alot more play in the gear lever and i mean alot, after speaking to one of my mates he said its normally the gear linkages, possibly worn or need adjusting.. i have no idea as im no mechanic and normally everything i touch breaks into a million little pieces. ( brute force and a hammer is not always the way to fix something it seems )

Anyways, after a hard days graft today im heading home, some little peanut in a punto is sitting on my arse all the way through the traffic and come the duel carrage way he tries to undertake me so everytime he gets up next to me i pop my foot down a little moer just to piss him off..
After about 3 miles of this i start smelling what seems to be burning oil now im not sure if it was mine or his struggling to keep up. at the next set of lights i come to a stop and theres mr punto revving the crap out his car next to me with his little goofy mates in the back so.. whats a fella to do..
come to the next set of lights i pull off normally becasue by this stage the punto is about 4 miles behind me, but as soon as i go to pop into 2nd she wont go and slips into 4th.. so i try to pop back into 2nd and she still refuses to go so i settled for 3rd.. next set of lights same problem, she does go into 2nd but i have to use quite abit of force, every other gear is perfectly fine...

I guess after my pointless essay, what im asking is, is this down to gear linkages or is the box on the blink? i dont really have the cash laying about for a new box

any advice would be greatfully accepted.

    Bump

Ok so today, i had no choice but to drive to work, car was fine other then the whole 2nd gear issue - car was sat at work from around 10am till 8pm. i go to leave work and the car refuses to go into first, then when she finally does with a bit of a thud, she either A: Pulls off as normal or B: struggles abit asthough she was in 3rd gear then i sometimes get a little oil/burning smell.

If anyone knows if this is the box, or maybe just the linkage please let me know.. i dont have time off of work at the moment so while im sat around i could be possibly looking for a new box. atleast till i get a few minutes to pop her in a guarage so they can have a poke around.

does it grind or crunch when your trying to get into 2nd??
Have you got enough gear oil?
is the bite point of your clutch high?

No grinds or crunch, she just refuses point blank to go into 2nd. easiest way to describe how it feels when trying to get into 2nd is asthough someone has welded a small piece of metal over where 2nd gear should be so it just slips into 4th insted.

There seems to be more then enough oil, and the bite is quite low on the clutch, i know for a fact the rubber or what not has gone because the gearstick does what it wants ( acts like its in nuetral when infact its in gear )

I did try having a quick look at linkages while at work, but where she is low i cant get under her (at work anyway) and by time i get home its normally pitch black or pissing down with rain.
the guarage over from work just decided it was the gear box without even thinking about trying to have alook and tried telling me it'll cost 800quid to get a replacment box, unfortunately for them i dont have twat on my forehead so wont be going there again.

I suspected the linkages at first, but now with 1st playing up and the smell i get sometimes im just not sure at all.

took the sax down to a little guarage close to where i used to work as managed to blag half day at work... getting ready to leave work she decided first gear wasnt to her liking either... so im not left with 3rd, 4th and 5th... with no choice but to drive home i set off in 3rd and head for the motor way... get on moterway and now have no 5th gear lol, so i now have a 2 speed car.. anyway.. todling along at 60 i finally make it to a guarage..

Left it there for 2 hours, come back and all is sorted, gearlinkage was completely shot to shit.. so my heart stopped pounding expecting the lady to say it was the box nackered..

Only cost me 42quid and she running sweet as a nut again now.. back to the roads
