Important! : rattling when turning...

  1. #1
    Hi all,

Have an issue with some rattling noise from the front end.

If im stationary engine on or off and turn the steering wheel you can feel it and hear it grind slightly from the 10am-2pm position only.

the main noise i can hear is when im driving only when turning i can hear it, i've tried it with clutch in, out, in gear or nuetral all the same noise its like a constant rattling noise from the front end somewhere?

any ideas on what this is? this seems to be all linked to my previous thread when i drove over a large stone.road at 40mph (unavoidable flicked by a truck) with my left front wheel.

    help appreciated.

    Driveshaft issue?

did another test today put it in nuetral ready for a corner and turned in nuetral and still makes a rattling noise when turning... constant only when turning.

    Any help?

i have same problem with my furio mate. boot on the half shaft (gearbox side shaft) hada ripped boot over the summer but wen i replaced it, it had done damage to my gearbox so it blew so i put a 1.1 gearbos in and put two new shafts in it and wen im turning even slightly to the left accelerate slighty it rattles like mad.

the best check you can do to check if it is the shafts is go to sumwere very flat and put the car on full lock in reverse and reverse slowly

if the car jumps (not literaly jump but u will notice a nudge) it is a shaft that is failing

the shaft that is failing is at the same side as to the direction of the wheel i.e (full lock to the left and nudging will reversing = left shaft failing)

trying to give an understandable explaination not that tidy though

    hope this helps

Yeah i get where your coming from ill give it a go in the retail park after work tomorrow when its late before i come home.

the main thing thats happening you can hear and feel it grind slightly on the slight turn to left and right. but when driving when you turn you can hear it rattle like mad if you listen or if its night and no music when going around 15-25 apart from that exhaust / filter has a bit of a noise.

If it is the drive shaft just a simple case of replacing then no harm done ?

Jus a little update I have the rattle noise coming from my car when I turn(no grinding noise though)and i`ve traced it to underneath the passenger seat, because when I put my hand on the seat the noise goes.Just have`nt had the chance to investigate further.

yeah wen my shafts were really bad they mad the most awful grinding noise did not sound nice at all. but wen i was driving with the shafts in this state i blew the gearbox... after replacing my 1.4 gearbox with a 1.1 i get that knocking noise if im going round a left hand bend at about 20+ mph it rattles like fook dont know why its doing this... no wait i do... its a citroen.

not sure mate a brand new half shaft is the guts of £70 thats including the cash back for handing in your old shaft

because im at the stage you are at i have no further knowledge sorry mate

Depends on how much the noise bothers you, i`d replace it because eventually it will fail.

Mine did that and it was the middle section pipe rocking after i had a new stainless steel backbox put on just had to adjust the angle and tighten now its fine. Maybe shield though for you?..

Yeah ill get it done its only a max of £30-50 for the cv bit? along with a new rod selector for my gears as its got alot of play in the stick and hard to put in 1st sometimes unless i release to nuetral then back again.

Are you sure its the gear selector rod that is the problem here?

naww its definatly the cv joints. gona fill mine with grease to see if that stops it. frys my head though, everytime you turn and hear it you think your gona pull the shafts clean out of it... saves tyres though

Haha no thats just another issue that i thought while its in getting new cv joint then might aswell get the gear selector sorted at the same time as its also MOT time.. Which im confident theres no issues but hand brake cable tightening needed.

mmmm... just realised lad... so stupid i didnt notice it before... i think my passenger side wheel bearing is away no loud as i can barely hear myself think but anyway... wud a bad bearing not cause resistance so the car wud always drift to the left?? and its always when im turning left.

sooo... cud this resistance cause excess wear and tear on the shaft or cv joint???
