Important! : Group buy for Up-rated torsion bars

  1. #1
    Hi all,

I am currently building a Saxo Vtr to race the 750mc Stock Hatch championship this year. I have a company making me some custom torsion bars and am offering anyone interested the oppertunity to grab some uprated bars much cheaper than the PS ones. At the moment he is testing the spring rate (believed to be around 110lb/in) and then using the same material will produce some at an increased rate. If I can get more people interested the cost of producing these bars will go down.

I don't know exact specs/prices yet as they are still testing them, but as soon as I know, il let anyone interested know. This company make torsion bars for current and vintage Forumla 1 cars, so know what they are about and I have seen the quality of the work and its excellent. They also prduce gear sets etc but they are mega bucks

I'll be happy to answer any questions, or pass them on the the guy I'm dealing with.

    Cheers all,

    Dan

I'd be interested in 23mm t bars if someone selling me 22mm bars lets me down... assuming they're the same spec as PS bars.
  3. #3
    Hi mate,

They will be basically the same spec as the PS ones. Although the chap warned me they may vary slighty depending on spring rates etc, i.e. for PS 23mm (265lb/in) may come up a slightly different size, you will still be able to fit them with out taking the axle apart though. It would be better to work from the spring rate than the diameter when tuning handling but most people just assosiate the rating with the PS ones.

Theres a company in leicester that manufacture different sized torsion bars. around £200 a set iirc.

might work out cheaper for you to buy them, then get your contact to test/check them make sure there ok.
  5. #5
Hmm, will see what they come back with anyway. Do you have any details for said company?

    Cheers
  6. #6
Might be interested pending prices ect

The stiffer the better... without dismantling the beam. (i like oversteer)

Worth noting that you can literally pick any thickness that you want with them.

Last time i went over there they'd just made up a set of 27mm ones on a picasso for a pug1off customer.

Can't fault the quality or service atall. Only thing i would suggest is that they used to use standard paint for the bars once made, I did suggest that they switch to powdercoating and find somewhere local to do it.

I opted to have mine unpainted and got the powdercoating done somewhere local to me where i could pick from 60+ off the shelf colours if id wanted to or virtually unlimited custom ones (went for gloss black anyway) which only cost me £20

For me the extra £20 invested in powdercoating is worthwhile

Defo in on these, Please put me down for a set! I also have 300lb Fronts so will want 23mm, maybe 24!
  36. #36
    Hi all,

Right I have been in touch with them and they have offered us the bars at £180 per set plus p+p. This is if we can get 10 people to order them, so far we have 8 and I have a couple of requests from some chaps over seas, which should make up the numbers.

Having discussed the best way to sort out money we decided that it would be easier (rather than everyone sending thier hard earned to someone they have never met) that payment will be send directly to ...... This way you get a recipt and peace of mind etc. All I require is email address' from eveyone who wants them so ...... can send you a paypal request form. If anyone doesn't want to use paypal I am sure if you speak to them there are alternative methods of payment.

After a deposit is recieved (which I am covering) they can start work making the torsion bars, and they should all be completed in 10 working days. The postage is around £25, so all in that £205 per set posted to your door.

    Is everyone game?

    Cheers,
    Dan

You will be ok at 23mm, I believe the splines are 23.5mm, although I haven't measured them, and after that the axle will need the arms off fit them. It isn't actually too bad of a job, just a pain if you have to re-adjust the height

I've got 23mm bars on my 106, i think i'll fit them to the Saxo and get bigger ones for the 106.
Dummy shocker ride height height adjustment tool FTW.

Any luck contaction the company in question yet Dan?

    Go bigger.
  45. #45
Any idea What size bars I would want for 235lb front springs? Or will standards be up to the job?
  46. #46
    Hi all,

The material is basically a form of spring steel which is tempered (basically multi-step heat treating) to toughen it up enough to use under a car, same as you would with a coil spring. I don't know exactly what grade of steel it is but apparently is the same as PS use.

@ wicked-vtr: I would go for 22 or 23mm bars, depending on how oversteery you want. LOL. If you go 23mm then it gives you more scope to upgrade the front in the future.

All I need is email address' guys! If I can get everyone's by Monday then we should have our bars in around 2 weeks time!! BS Engineering are just waiting for email address' (to send payment request) and the deposit, which I am paying on Monday, so they can start work. Updated list...

  53. #53
    Hi all,

I have passed on everyone's email address' to B S Engineering so you should be recieving a payment request soon. If everyone could put in the notes bit, their phone number and delivery address (if your paypal doesn't already have it) it will make things alot quicker to push through. Deposit is sorted so we should have our bars in around 10 days time

    Cheers,
    Dan

I've received an email about payment for the t bars, can we arrange collection of them as £28 for delivery seems somewhat steep.

*edit* I've emailed the lassie about it.

*2nd edit* She's happy for us to arrange collection instead of paying £28 delivery.

Does that mean we can arrange our own courier to collect then? So what is the due date for the first delivery to take place? Are these from the same place as the last group buy, can someone confirm that for me?
    cheers
  62. #62
Bars are from the same place as the last GB, if you've paid your £208 you've paid for delivery already, if you haven't paid yet email the lassie who sent you the paypal invoice for £208 and ask her to send you a revised one as you will arrange collection.

I always use www.interparcel.com only £8.39 to deliver the bars to me.

    Hi mate,

As Dave had said the bars are £180 plus p+p, so if you have paid £208, that will mean they will be posted to you when they are finished. I am not sure exactly when they will be finished or posted out, but if you speak to Gill you can arrange a courier to collect. How are you working it Dave, are you collecting yourself or are you sending a courier?

    Cheers,
    Dan

    Hi,

I followed the link from AXOC - any chance of slipping in an order?

My AX GT Mk2 (740Kg) is a bit of a compromise car between road and track day.

Suspension setup with Bilstein B8s & 150Lb springs up front & Pug Comp rear dampers so 23mm is probably too extreme...thinking 21mm might be more like it. Can't remember the ARB, think 24mm.

    Cheers,

  84. #84
LOL. I think my 25mm ones were 24.95 or something! Might have had less paint on though. Has anyone else had theirs yet?

I received mine last week and they are already in the car! Be aware though, mine were about 2mm too long so that when I put them in I couldn't get the retaining washers to fit in the recesses! Bit of a pain when you have to basically strip the axle to fit the larger diameter one! I just had to angle grind 2mm off then file it flat, not a big deal.

When you go to fit yours just check them against the length of the old bars first to save a bit of ball ache.

@ Suckmyrockets: I can send an email off to Gill if you are definitely interested, although I can't make any promises as most peoples bars have been delivered!

    Cheers,
    Dan

So with the bar being thicker than the spline do you need to remove the arms to get the bars in? I cant imagine them going through.the splines in the arms...

Ive never fit larger than standard bars thats all but may uprate to 21 in the near future

Thats correct mate, its not too much bother especially if you have done it before. just LOADS more faff if you have to readjust your ride heights as I had to about 3 times. lol.

    Dan
  88. #88
Yes id imagine if i set.my height same.as standard bars.in but with.your 25s it would sit.much higher. Do you race the car as 25 sounds massively stiff. I still use standard bars and a 24mm rear arb
