Mk3 to Mk2 cylinderhead

  1. #1
    Hi all,

Have searched but cant find anything of massive use. Does anyone know 100% what is needed to change a cylinderhead from a Mk3 to a Mk2/1.

    So far I have:

    Head - complete
    Inlet manifold
    Exhaust manifold
    Downpipe
    ECU
    Engine loom
    Coil pack
    Oil filter adaptor

Is there any other sensors that I need to change in the block and do I need to change the injector rail and injectors?

    Cheers,
    Dan

Sorry but where this mk3 head from?

The Mk3 is the roller rocker one with the 3 plug ecu and cat in the exh. manifold. The Mk1 is the large journal cam and the Mk2 is the small journal cam (with the cat under the car) from I am lead to believe.

Always though there was only two types of vtr heads though.

MK3? you sure about that mate? im sure there are only 2 MK's

Only two mk's but three engines.
Your mk3 is reffered to as a 3 plug, mk2 is a single plug silver top, mk1 is a single plug black top.

Why would you want to convert the head to a lower powered one?

it depends which head your wanting to change to..... you dont need half of the stuff you have though lol

youd have been better off with a full engine change for all the stuff youve bought

are you wanting to run a mk1 head, or and early mk2 head?

    mk1 has two heads btw.

Early mk1- Blacktop, ht leads, single plug ecu 90bhp
Late mk1/early mk2- silver top, roller rockers, coil pack, single plug ecu 90bhp
Late mk2- silver top, roller rockers, coil pack, 3 plug 98bhp

Cheers for replys, I'm wanting to change from a 3 plug ECU to a 1 plug ECU (basically late Mk2 to Mk1 ) for lots of boring racing related reasons. I haven't bought any of the bits yet just getting a list together!

Sorry for confusing everyone, its reffered to as a Mk3 in our regulations.

why dont you just fit a whole mk1/early mk2 conversion then, be miles easier then what your trying currently

Well I am in the process of rebuilding a mk2 bottom end. Which I thought were exactly the same as the mk1 so it doesn't make much difference to me whether I have to change sensors/wiring while installing. Just need to know what is different and if I need to modify the car or engine loom or throttle body etc. Cheers

dragging up an old thread, sorry.

same question though, building an engine out of some bits we have ready to fit.

Using a mk3 (3 plug) bottom end, with a mk1 (black top) head (complete with its inlet and exhaust manifolds).

    Car runs stand alone ecu.

Any problems likely to get in the way of fitting this?
Will the oil filter/dipstick on the mk3 block be a problem fitting the mk1 head/manifold?

    Can these be moved?
Any other problems in doing this?

    There is no mk3...

You may have to convert to metal oil filter

But you know what I mean, mk2 late model (with 3 plug ecu and dip stick through the exh' manifold)
