    sand back the rust, spray?

if its rusted through you'll need to sort that first. surface rust should come straight off

Most the time is spent in the preparation before painting. take your time sanding back the rust, apply some kind of rust treatment to it, tape and mask up where you dont want the paint to go (could get fidly in the engine bay) prime, paint ect.

can u paint over the rust sealent stuff and how do i know if it needs welding or not
  5. #5
If you sand away the rust and you left with a hole, it needs welding

hammerite k rust is amazing for home or if you want to spash out get some zink phosphate treatment and as said it can get fiddly but well worth it once done.

yh i took my engine out on my own today without any cranes or anything just a jack that you get in the boot and i can say i will never be trying it again on my own haha
im planning on doin the car white and blue theme i think so blue engine bay and white body wat u think to the idea
i imagine its been done before many times

different colour bays 99% of the time just look like the car has had a cheap respray and the bay hasn't been done

in my opinion the engine bay a different colour looks like a cheap re-spray where they couldn't be arsed to take the engine out.

it can look good if everything is hidden and no wires but its a massive job to get it to look like that as everything needs to be moved into the car.

firstly u wanna strip the bay completely. then it may need welding of plates usually under the fuse box and ecu try. make sure all the loose rust is gone. also use some sort of rust treatment on the exposed areas, rub down and prep.

u want it looking something like this

then the usual painting prep, primer, colour, laquer.

    .

    well worth it m8.

its worth renting an engine crane if you know what your doing and are quick with it! otherwise you splash out for a crane thats sat there while your scratching your head

iv done engine conversions on a polo and a civic and a 1.1 saxo before al with cranes and didnt seem like it would be hard to do without one but obviously not haha

and yh i know wat u all mean about thhe cheap paint job look u made me change my mind naw and go all white witha blue engine seems like a better idea

and yh i found a spot under the ecu that will need welding as i been sanding today cut my hand on the hole (didnt notice it)

thanks for ur input ill get some pics up soon

I took the motor out of my Mk (under the car method) and trailored it to a local garage for prep and paint, job was rubish though and it looked gash. Live and learn for me!
As above though, it's worth doing, it is a nice feeling putting it all back together, cleaning and painting bits up as you go etc.
    Best of luck mate

I had a go of sanding down my rocker cover & heat shield a wee while ago made it rust free . then kinda got drawn away from it. when i went back to it it was as if a hadent ever sanded it at all, most of the rust was back i should've put laquar or somthing to make it not rust again
