What should a clutch feel like?

How can you tell if yours is on its way out?
I know it should be smooth, but should it be light, heavy etc?

You press the loud pedal but you don't get any faster is the common sign.

i recently changed my clutch.. cost me 180 quid inc parts, usually when a clutch is going its quite high up to catch and when you're accelerating up hills you can hear the car revving high and the car doesn't seem to be moving very fast.

You should notice it takes longer to switch gears if its going,

    hope this helps, nathan.

On my old golf before the clutch went the biting point seemed to have got a lot higher than when i first got the car and it felt too light as well and not 'springy' enough.

Just got a clio which recently had a new clutch fitted and the biting points lower down than the golf and if feels allot more firm.

There's a test where you put it in 4th when stationary then try to set off... cant remember if the clutch is on the way out if it judders or not. Someone will have to clarify

Heavy or light is not really a good way to prove a clutch is on its way out
Some are more heavy/light than others, doesnt mean there is anything wrong with them

If it is not slipping or making odd noises then I would just assume its ok
You might be worrying about nothing mate, clutches all feel different

Agreed. My original Valeo clutch felt quite heavy, and the car would judder if I tried pulling away with not enough revs.

Had a Sachs fitted recently and the pedal feels mega light, bite is instant too.

When you pull away in 4th or 5th the car should stall or really really struggle this means your clutch is good! if it pulls away in 4th or 5th easily your clutch is on the way out!

    Syptoms i've found...

    Hard to get into gear.
    Juddering
    Slipping
    Hard to depress
    'notchy' pedal operation
grinding noise - indicates release bearing due to go through the clutch.
