I am thinking about putting some old style number plates on my car i.e. the plates with the black background. Does anybody know if this is illegal on a 2001 reg car?

#2totally illegal.

#3Cheers mate, i have looked over the dvla website and there nothing to say its illegal but also nothing to say it is legal.

#4Best you can do is legal pressed plates from dubmeister, not ebay jobbies.
-
#5Those style plates can only be put on the really old cars that (IIRC) had them originally.

#6The vehicle has to be registered before January 1973 to use the old style plates.
For cars registered after January 1973 and until September 2001 use the regular plate you see on most cars in the UK.
Post September 2001 and your vehicle must use the slightly newer style plate again. -
#7Dude I bought my plates from eBay £19.99 with Free P&P and I've never once been pulled
have a look at them they came the next day as well

#9are the french pressed plates legal???
-
#10No. Pressed plates can be but make sure you buy them from a known company company and not ebay. Just buy from dubmeister as they are legal.
Ebay ones will always say "Pressed show plates" which are not legal as they will have no manufacturere marking on them. -
#11also the ones from ebay have no reflective background.Quote:No. Pressed plates can be but make sure you buy them from a known company company and not ebay. Just buy from dubmeister as they are legal.

when buying pressed plates make sure you get the gb sign if any as the french and dutch ones are illegal if the car is british and you have a british licence.
i got pulled and fined the other day for having 2 german plates 30 quid each and a producer.
