Carbon Canister...

    Hi guys...just a little query,

On the vts engine there is a pipe going from the inlet manifold to the charcoal canister.....what does the canister actually do?? Just wondering as i decided the pipe going over the cam covers was ugly and cut it off fo re-routing.

    Thanks in advance.

i also need to know this as im running throttle bodies and the hose wasnt connected to anything which has lead me to thinking i could just remove it

Good bump........i needed to re-ask this question for when my bodies go on.

good question, its for fuel vapour, the solenoid opens at full throttle to suck the vapour outa it i think.
now worringly ive just reshelled from a gti with one into a ph1 106 without, now ive got no loose ends on my fuel tank, and obviously its still on the gti, its not going near my ph1.....
so where does the vapour come from? you can remove it without issue, but need to block the solenoid up, or itl draw air into the engine,

This sounds like another question for Sandy Brown and Colin Satchell lol......they will be getting bored of me soon lol.

    just found these,

Yes that pipe is connected to the canister discharge electrovalve inside drivers side wing. The canister is connected to the fuel tank to prevent petrol vapours from entering the atmosphere (anti-pollution).The canister is a cylindrical container equipped with an active carbon filter.
The electrovalve, monitored by the injection ECU, allows the petrol vapours stored in the canister to be recycled.
The throttle housing allows the petrol vapours to be recycled to the air inlet .
Don't remove canister discharge valve because ECU will illuminate MIL lamp on the dash

The tank has to have the space for the vapors to collect so that they can then be vented to the charcoal canister. A purge valve is used to control the vapor flow into the engine. The purge valve is operated by engine vacuum. One common problem with this system is that the purge valve goes bad and engine vacuum draws fuel directly into the intake system. This enriches the fuel mixture and will foul the spark plugs. Most charcoal canisters have a filter that should be replaced periodically. This system should be checked when fuel mileage drops.

hahahaha thats funny as ive just realised where my pipe goes too,on the ph1. the tanks from the gti and ph1 were the same apart from the pumps but the piping was the same. and the little breather canister goes into a rubber pipe that goes up and over itself into the rear chassis rail!!!!!!! and thats from factory. emmissions ftw! i guess in 91 they didnt care. in anycase it can be removed as i did on my last 16v xsi, but leave the solenoid plugged in just blank it so it wont let air in.... and the overflow just put somewhere safe away from the exhaust.............

im still baffled tho as loads of people dont have the line from the inlet to the canister connected so wouldnt this in theory make it useless? as theres no return coming from it to recurculate the gases

didnt make that clear, the breather canister behind the fuel tank half the height of a clipper lighter...... that thing! goes into the chassis rail.....

old school factory emmisions ftw lol, right lets see if im following blank off the the return to tank line and put the line to the canister somewhere outside the car to get rid of the built up gases?

yes thats it, if its a 3plug, id not disconect the valve thats in the bay/under the wing as it will mabee give a fault code....... just tuck it out the way and remove the pipes from both ends. obviously blank under the inlet mani....

the fuel tank vapour release is the bit clipped to the back edge of the tank, the one in the rusty clip lols.. the pipe out of that ,,, route that safely out the way, or into chassis rail, il see if ive got a pic of it on my motor.

na ive got a single plug mk1 on throttle bodies so theresnow where for the hose to clip to, im on to what you mean now ill have a look when im finishing the rear of the car cheers mate
