a clean rag will get rid of most of it if its just surface rust. try a light smear of oil on them and rub with a clean rag. give them a clean off in some parafin, or brake cleaner (or petrol will do for the "driveway mechanic") this will get the majority of any light surface rust off. as long as it isnt too bad, or abrasive. dont worry bout it.

If you even thought of putting dirty or rusty parts into an Engine, you shouldn't be near an Engine lol

perhaps put a picture of them up so we can establish how bad it is. a light surface contaminant will simply wipe off with an oily rag (ull have to wash them after), but any worse than that and u may have to give it a bit of elbow grease with some wire wool or something.

ANY cleaning of the cams should be done with them removed from the head.

If the cams are pitted once you have cleaned them up then its not ideal. They do tend to get surface rust on them quite quickly though but it rubs off with a bit of wire wool

You could prob get away with doing the lobes in situ with a scouring pad as long as you minmise bits falling into the engine and do an oil change after.
