HID'S & The Law.

Well realy interested in getting some HID's this month as my current saxo lights are poor.

If i get the 8000k Kit would the police pull me for these? My MOT tester wont be bothered about them as i know him but im just worried about getting pulled!, Has anyone been pulled for them before?

hi mate, depends on the police officers, some may pull and in some case they issue a heavy fine and order you to have the MOT again, some may not pull you but all in all HID's are illegal. I read on here (not sure if this is right) that they are cracking down on cars fitted with HID's that were not originally fitted in the showroom (the new BMW's Merc's etc... would be fine)

6k is a better amount mate as they look similar to the cars that come out of the factory with them. I've had 6k for over 2 years now with no problems

This is the official fact sheet on the subject from the UK governments department for transport issued December 2006.

In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern.

Thats a quick search its just a grey area when i fitted mine took mine to a local m.o.t test center got them adjusted the beam pattern is fine i am running angels tho not standered headlamps.

i dont see what the big deal is with HIDs. if it makes you see better why not have them on ? and why are only certain cars allowed to have these fitted
