car wont start first time

   as above, everytime i start the car when the engine is cold or hasnt been on for an hour or so, it wont start, doesnt even sound like the starter motor is going on, it just sounds like fuel pump priming, its the exact same noise as when your putting petrol in at petrol station, so im thinking it could be a loose connection becuase it does start eventually but never starts if iv got my foot on the clutch, any ideas?

   Check your starter and battery connections are tight and free from dirt 1st.
