Power steering pump noise?

  1. #1
    Hey I have a mark 2 1.1 saxo.

Recently I've been hearing a weird noise and I think its comming from the power steering pump?

When the cars running it makes a weird high pitch noise but when I turn the engine off the power steering pump stays on for another few seconds before powering down. I noticed when I went to check the pump that the cap wasn't screwed on properly. Could this be the problem? I screwed it back on and the same noises occured.

    What do I do???

    Help is much appreciated, thank.

P.s. The power steering works fine.

It sounds like the pump could be on it's way out... although it's quite normal for it to make a slight high pitched noise - its just the pressure in the system.

I doubt the loose cap would make any difference.

Keep an eye on it, and as soon as it starts playing up.. time to be on the look out for a new or recon pump.

hmmm sounds like it could be the brushes in the pump, does the noise get louder and quieter as you turn?

The pump gets quiter as you turn it but louder when your not turning it..

sounds like its on its way out then. or the brushes are getting jammed, they tend to get gunked up. you could try gently tapping it as someone steers the steering wheel, sometimes it kicks back in, but can sometimes only be a temporary fix.

I was having this same problem, I got told from a Citroen dealer to hit it gently when it aint working and then if it starts to work after it then its the brushes inside and the pump needs replacing! Ebay £50 for used, bit of a gamble but paid off.
