206 fuel gauge problem

hi, i know its not a saxo but still in need of help. just picked up a2000 peugeot 206 1.4lx as a cheap run around and for work, checked it all over but when on way home noticed the petrol gauge had'nt moved,even after putting £20 in it, it just stays half way, any ideas????

also think the water temp gauge faulty too or sensor as after being on motorway for 20 minutes the level shot up to above red and warning came on to stop but didnt gradually go up it went straight to it, then as i slowed it went back down to qauter way up which it had been previous for 20minutes,pulled over and car wasn't even hot, fan was on but tempratutre seemed fine, drove of and did it again,seemed to be when put my foot down but then goes back down.
any help with either ot these problems gratefully recieved.

Had a similar problem in my saxo not so long ago, after 4 days of driving the needle hadn't moved at all. I opened the bonnet and disconnected the battery left it a min then reconnected it up, needle went from half to empty. Maybe try that worked for me.
