JP4 head fitting... need remap or will plug and play?

  1. #1
I was pondering the other day as to if with the bigger valves and slight differences internally in the head if you can just drop a JP4 head on the J4 bottom end etc without any mating problems with the intake manifold and if you need tha car mapped with the head?

Im unsure if having the bigger valves but not having the ECU mapped would cause problems? or does it mean that everything just inhales and exhails quicker/better?

    Cheers all

obv remap be best but will run fine

    cheers dude

Is there anyone who does remapping of stock ecu's which they would recommend?

    valves can catch standard pistons.
use j4 valve springs collets, followers.
j4 pulleys. j4 cams. (altho they dont sit perfectly on the valves)
the j4 intake wont line up with the jp4 mounting points.
not many places remap standard ecu, but wayne at chipwizards is probably the best known for results with the standard ecu.

Wayne at chip wizards is highly reccomended for the triple plug ECU's.

valves be fine as long as you use right hg and dont bugger timing up to badly

    Along same lines........

What happens to the sump breather on the J4? The one that runs up and connects to the side of the head? as the JP4 doesnt have the correct hole. Just block it off? or connect somewhere else?

    Sorry for the slight hi-jack

easy you have the breather from the top cam cover if using j4 covers routed to go to it

im selling the head of my c2 vts and inlet manifold if you need anything

So what size HG is correct? in mm?

So am I correct in saying that you use the sump from the J4 and that it has a breather pipe which id connect to one of the 2 rocker cover outlets?

Ive not noticed the sump breather before somehow... could I connect the sump breather to my catch tank?

Nice to know that chipwizards are there if I decide not to go for standalone management although it seems like a no brainer if I go far with engine mods

Plans for the future say u want standalone mate

someone told me i could use all the internals of the c2 head with standard saxo vts cams depending on the head gasket used, but im also unsure of what head gasket to use. any info would be good.

anyone got any idea on HG size?

well JP4 uses 0.6mm one as standard and the J4 uses the 1.6mm iirc? I'd use the J4 one

100% use the J4 one on an engine with the JP4 head on the J4 block - the pistons and valves will be too close for comfort otherwise.

1mm difference will that mean that my compression is going to lower itself my an amount that will change the way the car runs... or is the jp4 head 1mm shorter

does that mean that sophia's measurements are off then as j4 is smaller gasket than jp4 one according to the above and would mean closer pistons or an i wrong?

different as the JP4 pistons have a slight dome to them so c/r is slightly higher that way so smaller gasket. But with the JP4 head have bigger valves using the J4 gasket is the best way to go to avoid problems.

With the difference you won't notice a difference will be barely noticeable

might as well not bother and stick a set of cams in the original head.

My car has been running rich for about 8 months so I wanted to get the head cleaned up & pistons etc and whilst I was at it I thought I would swap the head for the JP4 and put the j4 internals in there, I want to be able to fit the alloy c2 vts inlet and plumb in direct port nos.

Inlet looks better and better suited for direct port nos imo.

I would like to fit some mild cams something like PH2's, not a fan of the lumpy idle with PH3/708's equivalent...

you may find that if you deviate from standard cams you are going to get contact unless you use pistons with larger valve cutouts. Theres no problem with idle with the Cat Cam 708s if you get the car mapped properly.
