emmisions/runnig rich

basically im trying to find out what up with my vtr its not due its mot for another 4 months but is running stupidly rich you can start it for 2 miniutes and give it a few revs and it smells of petrol quite bad from the exhaust and by the cat no smell from engine and quite a bit of white smoke what could be causing it i know the exhaust does need changing as its been welded about 10000 times and been filled and wrapped by previous owner

Your post is hard to read, sorry, but I would be looking at the lambda sensor firstly. The white exhaust could mean either condensation in the exhaust or head gasket leaking. Check coolant level to see if it has dropped.

Another member on here had near enough the same problem,and it was the CAT that needed changing.

Yes as Stevo67 said - I had the exact same problem on my VTS and after changing nearly everything (lambda sensor, temp sensor, etc. etc.) and spending 2 hours with Citroen "experts" they all beleive that it needs a new CAT - don't do what I did and buy a cheapie CAT though - they don't work - I'm now on the hunt for a decent quality but not too expensive CAT as the ones over here (I live in France) cost over 600€ each.

To confirm that you've not got an issue with the engine - whip out the plugs to see what they look like as they'll tell you if she's running rich or not.
